A Thomaston man was arrested for military desertion

THOMASTON — A Thomaston man was arrested for military desertion 10 days after his 20th birthday.


Thomaston police took Army Pvt. Jared Wayne Porter, 20, of Thomaston to Knox County Jail Monday, Feb. 4. According to Knox County Chief Deputy Ernie McIntosh, Porter was released from jail Tuesday per military orders.

“We don’t know the particulars,” McIntosh said. Military police are “totally different from civilian police.”

Porter graduated from basic combat training in 2007. During the nine-week training period, he received instruction in drill and ceremony, weapons, rifle marksmanship and bayonet training, chemical warfare, field training and tactical exercises, armed and unarmed combat, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history, traditions and core values.
