At that point, the shelter had provided 5,600 bed nights to 198 different youths. Of those teens, 36 percent were Rockland residents and 69 percent were Knox County residents, according to the letter.
While HCI placed the highest bid on the property, the council voted in March 2008 to sell 218 Main St. and the adjacent properties to John Hanson Jr., the owner of Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors. The city and Hanson agreed to make the sale effective on Dec. 1 to allow Home Counselors time to find another location for the shelter. Hanson said he plans to relocate his magazine and Internet operations from Camden to the property in Rockland. The magazine owner said he also wanted to offer business marketing services from the complex.
HCI applied for and received Planning Board approval to renovate the building on Brewster Street but the organization has not been able to raise the $330,000 estimated to be necessary to transform the existing office space into the handicapped accessible eight-bedroom facility proposed at that time.
