Cardin Fires Staffer For Racist Blog Posts (Oreos...)
Posted from the Maryland College Democrat blog

The AP just broke a story regarding the news that the Cardin campaign fired a junior field director for writing about eating oreo cookies with the staff, and referring to Cardin's friends as having "Jewish noses" in her personal blog.

A blog posting Aug. 25 refers to a stack of Oreo cookies "looming in the back of one of the campaign pantries" and how staffers have to "surreptitiously glance around" before eating them.

"The subterfuge would be unnecessary, and snack time would be far less amusing, had an angry citizen not thrown the aforementioned delicious snack food at one of our opponents to comment on his lack of racial loyalty," the blog entry reads.

The blog also contains an entry describing Cardin's friends as "large men with strong, loud voices and Jewish noses."

The Cardin campaign displayed class in its swift firing of this petty, attention hungry staffer. The female staffer had worked for Cardin for only one month before her superiors found out about her blog and immediately fired her. I read the archived pages of her blog (it has been taken down) and she seems very isolated and her blogging style seems prone to embellishment...she is in no way representative of Cardin's record, his campaign, or his character.

Let this incident serve as a bellwether for the rest of the Maryland campaign. Will the conservatives and the "gotcha!" style tabloid media let this little blogger distract from the issues at hand? Or will we all display a higher level of political debate and stick to a dialogue on the candidate's histories, views, and level of competence? We need to find the best Senator to serve Maryland for the next 6 years, so we must continue discussing issues that are pressing Marylanders- affordable healthcare, energy; quality education and a new direction in Iraq.

I have a bad feeling the Steele campaign will seize upon this snot nosed staffer's comments on her blog to try to indict the racially and socially inclusive Cardin as some sort of person who would use this type of oreo slur. Anyone who makes these oreo comparisons has something seriously wrong with them. I condemn any College Democrat, any student, anyone who would use such terminology, references, whatever.

However Steele would be as despicable as the ex-Cardin staffer if he were to exploit this incident to incite racial tension within our great state. If Steele is to show any leadership at all in this campaign, he should do what he can to limit any kind of political fire storm over this. Any GOP members, pundits, or anyone who would try to exploit this should be condemned by Steele. Remember that.

1. She made some disparaging remarks about older Jewish men
too. The person didn't seem to have much political savvy at all. I don't know how she got into this field.

3. After listening to this on the news
tonight with Steele's answer to it, is there any way to see if the RNC paid her?

Melissa Sellers, a Steele spokeswoman, sharply criticized the comments on the blog, calling it deeply disturbing.

"We already know from an accidentally released strategy document that the national Democratic Party has the objective of 'knocking' the Lieutenant Governor down and 'discrediting' him in the African American community, and now it's clear that this attitude has permeated through the highest levels of the Cardin campaign," Steele said in a written statement this weekend.

4. I watched this on Channel 13 news last night
and it was disgusting. They are going to make Steele a martyr both to his race and party. The truth not withstanging that this was a low level staffer who had only been with the campaign for 1 month before being fired - so apparently not the "highest levels" of the Cardin campaign. Needless to say, the Press just reported it.
