Michael Steele, Democrat per the Baltimore Sun
Just looking at the paper where the Sun has a report on Harold Ford's race in Tennessee. They provide a chart of Major African American Candidates in 2006 election, on page 7a (not online that I could find though here is the report:http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/nationworld/bal-te.tennessee06oct06,0,5941149.story?coll=bal-home-headlines. Each candidate is listed, with party affiliation state, office seeking and outlook. Steele is 5th in order showing: Democrat, Maryland, Senate and Underdog.

Being identified as a Democrat in a Blue state, could certainly help that underdog status.

2. It is in the paper version, not online
it is on page 7A if you have access to the paper. I looked online but could not find the inset they have in the hard copy version.
