Commuting from Anne Arundel to DC
Now that we've finally sold our house ( ), we're looking at neighborhoods where we might want to buy. I really like some places in Anne Arundel but DH isn't thrilled about the commute. We're currently in Alexandria and he works near L'Enfant. How bad is the commute from, say somewhere like Odenton, Riva or Davidsonvile into DC? I know there's a MARC station in Odenton but I also have some safety concerns about the area.

Where's a good place to get info about commuting options? I've been to MTA and saw stuff about commuter coaches. Is there a commuter tax credit in MD?

(So many questions....! I also have questions about taxes and cost of living in AA county too.)

TIA :hi:

1. Hmmm
I live in Annapolis. When I want to go into D.C./NOVA I usually go the Metro station in New Carollton. It's right off of 50/495. It's about a 20min. drive or so down Route 50W to the 495 exit.

Hope that helps... I have a friend who lives in Montgomery County and commutes to D.C. everyday, using Metro and such, and he spends a good amount of time commuting, even being close to D.C.

2. I can't answer most of your questions...
but, I get the monthly pass from MTA out of pre-tax income, so I know there is a tax credit. I don't know what the upper limit is, though. Sorry I can't be more help.

I'm in Baltimore, so I couldn't tell you about commute times.

3. Have you looked at Takoma Park?
My daughter just moved into an apartment there and loves it.

4. I have a cousin in Takoma Park
Another cousin in Silver Spring.

I wanted to be close to the water :-)

We went driving around AA county yesterday. Davidsonville and Riva. I was disappointed in the number of McCain/Palin signs I saw :-(

5. Commute
I used to live in Dunkirk in northern Calvert Co and I work in Arlington. It took about 50 mins in the morning to drive in and a bit longer in the afternoon.

6. It's brutal from Annapolis
I did an internship in Clarendon and had to commute to DC from Annapolis. 60-80 minutes each way. The thing about the Metro and commuting is that you have to drive half way to DC just to get on the metro. It's not at all convenient.
