1. I understand the state gets a bit red out that way. Don't know much
else about Hagerstown. Kind of a drive-by on the highway for me when I go to Western PA.

2. Its nice but where would you be commuting to?
Traffic can be awfully bad up that way. Pretty country but a little on the red side.

3. Not commuting!

I'm retired, living in Silver Spring now after 20+ years in DC. Daughter in school at WVU, so we'll be a little closer to one another(but don't know what that's worth with 21 year old!)

Just returned from 2d viewing; decided to rent apartment in historic district, which reminds me of our neighborhood in DC! Parkland, beautiful old homes. I appreciate the scenery (and liked driving to Frederick from H'town on 40 instead of 70.)

I'll both avoid and learn from 'red side' there, I hope!

4. Only if you can handle an early winter in November.
I was only there once when I was younger and the scenery is beautiful. There's a very nice shopping outlet there from what I heard so if you love shopping you'll really like it.

One thing, tho': Winter comes pretty early so if you can handle it, enjoy!

5. Thanks 'Chick.
I don't care to shop (and can't afford it!) but don't mind early winter. Beautiful scenery is for me!

6. Hagerstown is nice
IMO Western MD is on par with the Seattle area and Upstate NY (I've lived in all three areas). The natural beauty is great, low crime, low cost of living. I grew up there and I just got back from a visit. I know a few people that commute to DC daily from Western MD because they don't want to live anywhere else.

If possible - I recommend that you keep going west to Frostburg. Yes, it is very "Red" but it's also a quiet and small college town. It seems about 5-10 years behind the rest of the country but it's very nice.

Maybe I'm feeling overly nostalgic but Western MD is one of my favorite places. You could do far worse (like Memphis, TN - my current location).

8. Thanks, jmj! Good to hear!
Had no particular place in mind; just checked ads and found what appeared to be a nice apartment in Hagerstown, with excellent terms. SO, I'll stay there! Moving in a week.

Natural beauty is very important to me, and low cost of living and crime are also. Daughter in school at WVU.

Let me know if there are any particular places and things you'd suggest, for a newcomer.

Thanks.

10. Hey, good local racing is uniquely American
Like minor league baseball and county fairs. No worry - it's a good thing to do if guests descend with "guys" to be entertained.
Peoplewatch the kids around the stands if you go with 'em - an event in itself!
