Brockton soldier is killed in Iraq
By Mike Underwood, Enterprise staff writer

BROCKTON — An Army captain who was due to see the birth of his first child in two weeks was killed in Iraq on Friday.

The heartbroken family of Brockton native Army Capt. Anthony Palermo Jr., 27, paid tribute to the “brave and fearless” soldier who was killed early Friday morning when an improvised explosive device exploded near his Humvee in Iraq.

Palermo, a 2003 graduate of Bridgewater State College, was due to fly to Germany on April 24 to be by the side of his wife, Kristin Pine, for the birth of their first child. She is also an Army captain, stationed in Wurzburg, Germany.

“Tony didn't choose to be in the war but he did it because he believed in the freedom this country stands for,” said Griffin.

“He sacrificed his life for all of us and it would be nice for people to give that some thought,” she said.
