Giant turkeys terrorize Brookline (again)
Submitted by adamg on Wed, 08/15/2007 - 8:00am.

Last year, sharp-clawed turkeys attacked the good citizens of Brookline.

Then the coyotes chased them away. http://www.universalhub.com/node/3798

Now the turkeys are back. And this time, they mean business. http://www.universalhub.com/node/3798

A Menace Most Fowl

"They came down the hill and followed us," she explained, recounting the frightening incident. "As I was walking faster, they'd walk faster."

"I heard a sound behind me -
"And then I felt the turkey's claw on my back."

So said Brookline resident Marianne Lee in a front-page story in the Brookline Tab entitled Turkeys on the Attack. Even though Brookline is surrounded on three sides by the urban jungle of Boston, we apparently have a turkey problem. Families of these sizeable birds are roaming the back streets of Brookline, emboldened by people who've taken to feeding them in recent years. Ever eager for edible handouts, they're now getting brazen and approaching people - and most people, it seems, do not like it.

Residents like Marianne Lee have complained to animal control but haven't produced any results. There's not much they can do, since the birds are endangered. About a year ago, though, I watched in wonder as a troupe of turkeys trotted across the street from our apartment. Eventually, an animal control officer drove by and dealt with them the only way he could - chasing them onto the roof of a church so they'd become someone else's problem.

Video of some Brookline turkeys strutting their stuff.

1. I've encountered these turkeys myself.
There was a flock of maybe 5-6 of them that roamed around about 100 yards from where I work. They would just be walking around in the middle of the street and I had to stop my vehicle while they took their sweet-ass time getting out of the way.

Another time, one of them had one of the guys cornered in the parking lot and would block him from getting into his car.

I didn't realize that they were back creating problems again. I'll have to
bring my camera along with me and see if I can get some pics.

3. Funny
Perhaps this will lower the property values a little in Brookline.

Sorry if this is very funny to me--I grew up in Brookline, oh so many years ago.

In Arcadia, California, there is a place called the L.A. County Arboretum, and the official "bird" of Arcadia is the Peacock. The peacocks (and peahens) call the Arboretum home, but it's not unusual for them to get out and roam around the streets and rest of the city. They block the roads often, and they can be a real pain. But the people in Arcadia pretty much let them get their way because they're so celebrated. As a result, the peacocks and the people get along well.

Perhaps the people in Brookline should embrace the turkeys instead of getting so pissed off. Hey--in the beginning days of our fledgling republic, Ben Franklin suggested the Wild Turkey as our official bird. While I don't think good old Ben was imbibing a little of the drink of the same name, perhaps he was all too well familiar with their personalities.
