Why can't Mass. start a single-payer health care system?
I know this was proposed a few years ago and failed, but health care has really gone downhill since.

If it were packaged as a pro-business, pro-competitive measure that would also shore up the state's hospitals, could it have a chance of passing? We can certainly afford it - with a yearly economic output of just under $300 billion, MA has a bigger economy than European countries such as Switzerland, Sweden, Finland, and otheres and approx. the same size as Belgium. They can all afford universal health care.

It could be paid for as a tax fixed at 75% of current biz per-employee health care cost, paid for by employers over say 25 people. It could cover everyone, and the state would drop drug costs by bulk purchasing.

Why can't this work? If all the Red states want their no-gov lifestyle, then fuck 'em. I want MY state gov to work to make our lives better.

1. Why can't the whole NE form a
coalition health care system? We all want it here, the population is here for it, we have the doctors. Why can't the NE get universal single payor?

3. Because of those pricks in NH ;-)
I agree 100% that the bigger the system, the bigger the pooling of risk and the lower the insurance premiums. I think the best way to start is by demonstrating how well it works, and then inviting other states to join in.

Eventually, even the lunatics in NH would be knocking at the door.

2. We can have single payer - but Mitt would veto, but we'd override! :-)
not a bad idea for Mass (the rest of NE would fight the tax increase - not realizing the savings in premium more than offset that cost!)

4. IIRC, Dukakis did this when he was governor, but
before it took effect he was out and the legislature repealed it.

I think it's a great idea, but I don't know if it would be done. If it is, the bushies would probably pass a federal law saying that states couldn't do it.

look at our state leg results and what we stand for. All heartily rejected by the conservative asswipes in this country.
