BROCKTON —

The four candidates for mayor gathered Thursday for the first formal debate of the campaign, sparring over downtown development, the proposed power plant, crime and city finances.

On the ballot in the Sept. 15 preliminary election are incumbent Mayor James E. Harrington, Councilor-at-large Linda Balzotti, business owner Arnold Greenblatt and political newcomer Stephen Walsh. That vote will narrow the slate to two candidates, who will vie to be the next mayor in the Nov. 2 election.

On Thursday morning, the four gathered at the Brockton cable TV studio to answer questions from The Enterprise, Brockton Community Access, WXBR and WATD radio stations, and inbrockton.com. They also fielded questions from each other during the 90-minute forum.

Walsh, proclaimed as the only candidate who {OPENLY} supports development of a 350-megawatt power plant in the city, asked Harrington and Balzotti why the power-plant issue wasn’t put before the voters.
