Massachusetts Mom Charged in Deaths of 9-Year-Old Daughter, Unborn Baby
Source: AP

DEDHAM, Mass. — A Massachusetts woman charged in the deaths of her 9-year-old daughter and unborn son has been arraigned on murder and manslaughter charges, but an evaluation done for the court found her still incompetent to face trial.

Authorities say Fang Chi-Xue of Quincy fatally stabbed her 9-year-old daughter in April and stabbed herself in the abdomen, killing her unborn baby. She is also accused of trying to strangle her 14-year-old daughter, who told police her mother believed her husband was going to leave her.

Chi-Xue was arraigned Thursday in Norfolk Superior Court. A not guilty plea was entered on her behalf after the judge was told she remains mentally incompetent.

She is due back in court March 12, when a new report on her competency is due.

6. It's a bit different in China and Japan
when a mother will take her children with her in a suicide because she knows they won't fare very well without her.

Yes, it's a distorted way of thinking but suicide is always a distorted way to think unless one is terminally ill and in intractable pain.

8. Perhaps Hmong/Vietnamese

Based on the name and the fact that there are large settlements in my area, so the name looks similar to the names I've seen around here.

The Hmong are a very tribal people with a lot of social rules and expectations we don't realize. If she didn't speak English and was kept entirely in their conservative society, she may have acted out of a sense of powerlessness and hopelessness, rather than vengeance or rage. Or, as we occasionally find in every other social group, she could simply be insane.

But it wouldn't be proper to make assumptions before the whole series of events and her defense are heard in court.

4. How can she be charged for murder of the unborn child? That
said,God help her.

She obviously is insane and if she ever regains her sanity will have to live with this the rest of her life.

7. Semantics apparently
If she went to a clinic and had it done by a doctor it's legal. Do it yourself and it's murder. Makes no sense to me either.

10. Maybe the charge should be changed to practicing medicine without a license
Aren't people routinely charged with that when they perform abortions but aren't doctors (particularly when the woman dies)?
