BOSTON (AP) Postal officials concerned about recent gun violence suspended mail delivery Tuesday to 550 homes at a public housing complex in the city's Jamaica Plain section.
The decision to stop deliveries to the Bromley-Heath housing development was made after a shooting in ''broad daylight'' Monday put the two carriers who deliver mail to the complex in fear for their safety, a U.S. Postal Service spokesman said. No one was injured in the shooting, which was one week after a man was shot to death while visiting his mother at the development.
A tenant organization leader said many of the 1,900 residents were ''outraged,'' and claimed postal officials overreacted. Residents, some of whom are elderly and handicapped, were told Tuesday morning that they must pick up their mail at the post office, about one mile away, until further notice.
''The customers are inconvenienced, and we feel very bad,'' spokesman Bob Cannon said. ''Our carriers are not naive, but when bullets are flying around, it's time to take drastic steps.''
