Thursday, June 2, 2005
The public is invited to hear Rep. Marty Meehan (D-Mass.) speak at the First Parish in Bedford, on the Town Common, Sunday afternoon, June 5 at 12:30 p.m. Meehan comes to First Parish at the encouragement of Brian Hart whose son John was killed in action in Iraq. Meehan and Hart have made common cause in exposing unwelcome truths about the war and dissenting from both pro and anti-war orthodoxies.
"What does it mean to support our troops?" asks Hart. "It means giving them armor and protection but it also means having a plan that will get them out. As of now, we have no plan. Occupiers stay; liberators leave. Our troops can't speak freely for themselves. Democracy requires a national discourse. We owe it to John and all who have died to have this conversation. There is a silence that fear brings and we must have the courage to speak out." Hart is hopeful that, in the months to come, other speakers will follow Meehan to address the war from a variety of perspectives.
After recently visiting Iraq, Meehan has prepared a draft White Paper that outlines an exit strategy, including a withdrawal of most American troops within 12-18 months. Anyone wishing a copy of Meehan's White Paper may receive one by writing to office@uubedford.org.
