The Labor Day Blog-a-thon at the Bourne rotary on Cape Cod
Edited on Thu Sep-08-05 10:27 AM by unhappycamper
Here are some of the pics from the First Annual Labor Day Blog-a-thon at the Bourne rotary on Cape Cod.

The call to arms was sounded by PuraVidaDreamin in this post:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=158x6136

We set up around 1:30PM EST, and started breaking down and cleaning up around 6PM. Traffic coming off Cape Cod was very light, considering the day. Normal backups are in the 3 ~ 5 mile range, with almost complete gridlock around the rotary; lots of cars came by with NO gridlock.

Here are the cars heading northbound into the rotary:

The first thing they saw entering the rotary:

A little side note here. As we were standing there and flashing the peace sign or thumbs up at cars, we were guessing the positive vs. negative response was about 3-1. I said “Naaaaah. I think it’s more positive than that.” So we decided to (very un-scientifically) count the responses. Positive responses included horn tooting, thumbs up, waving, and peace signs. Negative responses included the ever thoughtful “Fuck You”, “Get a job” & thumbs down. We counted for about a half hour – the final tally was 147 positive to 8 negative. We were getting positive responses from JAGUARS, MERCEDES & CADILLACS!

Some of the other signs:

It’s a local issue that the VFP is trying to raise. During the Viet Nam war, the Globe would publish causality numbers on the front page once a week. The Globe is refusing to do the same for the Iraq war. Read all about it here:

Some of the other signs:

And this is the last thing they saw as they went onto the bridge:

This blogging was brought to you by these Patriots:

Peace.

on edit to clarify lack of gridlock

1. Reason for no gridlock? $3.50/gallon of gas is impacting tourist areas.
Great work.

This deserves to be on the GREATEST PAGE. Nominated.

3. The photos are great!
What an amazing day.

Felt like to me that 75percent of the traffic that passed
by was giving thumbs up, honking, peace signs.

One guy yelled out, "What took you so long?"

Not sure why, but those who didn't always approve
of our message yelled out the same creative line,
"Get a Job" or, "Fuck You" . Such imagination.

The Vets for Peace have seriously got to be
one of the top 5 Peace groups in this country.
These are men with convictions, and history
to back it up with.

A state trooper stopped to find up what we were
up to, and then went on his merry way. We do
still have a first ammendment people USE IT!

Unhappy even seemed ahhhh, dare I say it...
happy! For a little while anyhows.

6. Oops. I forgot to mention the State Trooper.
When we were setting up in the rotary, someone must have called 911. (The Bourne State Trooper Barracks is right on the rotary, so response time is quick.) As he pulled onto the rotary, he asked me "What's going on?" in a non-threatening way. I explained that we were with the Veterans for Peace and were going to show signs to traffic. I also mentioned we had checked with the ACLU and the state rep about standing in the rotary.

I told him we are very aware of traffic hazards, and would make sure that our signs did not create any problems. He said "OK" and drove off. I was MOST impressed by his courtesy.

Here he is leaving the blog-a-thon:

8. PVD and UHC: Great job, guys!! Just disagree on one thing:
I have to say I think VFP is THE number one peace group in the country.

Like Cindy Sheehan, they have the moral authority to speak out about the war. They have served and they know exactly what this war is about. It is an elective war, it has nothing whatsoever to do with defending our nation (of assholes).

Not only that, but they are active all over the country. Last weekend we hosted the Northern Tour Bus from Camp Casey along with Veterans For Peace Chapter 27: They are awesome and there are a hell of a lot of them out there working for peace every damn day.

Here are some of our guys from the rally last weekend at the state capitol:

11. A word to readers
I believe that the NOLA disaster is a direct result of the illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq. The NOLA disaster is a continuation of the cronyism, incompetence, and looting of our national treasure that was perfected in Iraq.

IMHO, now is not the time to let folks forget about the Iraq occupation. That is the reason we decided to go ahead with this pro-peace rally.

14. Money earmarked for infrastructure improvements in NO
were cut and diverted to *'s war on Iraq.

Our National Guard members, who signed up to serve during just this type of natural disaster, were of course sent off to Iraq as well.

This failures surrounding Katrina were absolutely tied into the fiasco in Iraq!
