WMD/OPPORTUNITY TO MEET EMMY WINNING JOURNALIST
The Newbury DTC has a unique opportunity coming up on September 18. You have the opportunity to see a fine documentary and meet an award winning journalist.
WMD, Weapons of Mass Deception, is an award-winning documentary by journalist/filmmaker Danny Schechter. The film, which won Best Documentary at both the Denver and Austin Film Festivals in 2004, depicts a media guilty of selling the Iraq war instead of telling the truth, by adopting a patriotic correctness and a uniformity of perspective that is undermining democracy in America.
Schechter, known to area natives as WBCN's news dissector, was a producer at CNN before moving to ABC News' 20/20, where he produced 50 segments for ABC and won two national Emmys. A Cornell University graduate, he received his Master's degree from the London School of Economics, and an honorary doctorate from Fitchburg College. He was a Neiman Fellow in Journalism at Harvard and an adjunct professor at the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University. Schechter's writing has appeared in leading newspapers and magazines including the The Nation, Newsday, Boston Globe, Columbia Journalism Review, Media Studies Journal, Detroit Free Press, Village Voice, Tikkun, Z, and many others.
