Public transportation in Boston - Good or Bad?
Considering a week in Boston - we like to use public transportation whenever possible. Is it comparable to San Francisco or DC?

8. Unless you're coming from Newton.
Unless they've had a massive rate cut since I moved away. :(

2. It's extremely good
Plus you get the added bonus of avoiding the city's drivers, who are among the worst in the developed world.

3. Now I have a Kingston Trio earworm
He may ride forever neath the streets of Boston...
He's the man who'll never return

4. Better than either DC or San Fran. - Not as good as New York
the wait during the day is not "short" - but you can get just about anywhere - and fairly quickly.

10. Thanks all-
It is always less stressful & more fun to get around if your not looking for a street and driving.

9. Good, very good
We were in Boston last year for the convention and we got around very easily. Bostonians were great and gave us tips on how to get around the city. They told us which connections would get us closer to our destinations, what restaurants we should try and sights we should see. If in doubt, ask a native - they are friendly and geniunely nice people.

11. The T
although it is the oldest Underground in the USA, it is among the best - not the cleanest, but goes almost everywhere one would want to go. Safe, even late at night. Underground entertainment is good to really bad but always entertaining :silly:(especially Park and Harvard on the Red Line). for $1.25 it beats the traffic (parking is ridiculous) and the cabbies.
IMHO, DC is sterile - the Metro, not the whole town B-)

14. Would like to see historic sites
Lots of walking tours I hope historical, gardens, old buildings, with coffee shops and pubs thrown in, not really into tourist trap kinds of things, but I have wanted to go to Salem since I was a kid. Have been out to Cape Cod numerous times, btw.
