Hi! I'm from GA & I have a question about Rep. Edward Markey.
He's on CSPAN WJ now (Wed. morning, 10/26/05) and he is discussing the switch from analog to digital TV and how it will cost each analog TV owner at least $60 per TV set to buy a conversion box in three years time. :wow:
I don't have digital TVs. (I have 3 TVs.) :( I had no idea that this was going to happen.

He suggested that each analog TV for sale have a warning sign: "CAUTION: Purchase at your own risk. Because of the Republicans, this TV will not work after the switch to all digital TV."

I've seen him on CSPAN before and I really like this Dem. Rep. He seems to be well-informed and articulate with a great knowledge of the subject at hand. He handles the rabid GOP callers quite well. (OMG! A caller just told him to "shut your damn mouth." Markey said "have a nice day." )
What do ya'll think of him? What district does he represent?

Cheers. CB

Check the FCC website if you want to cry.

Go to MEDIA MATTERS dot COM too!
READ ALL ABOUT that and a lot of other things that are alarming!

Take a L@@K at http://www.freepress.org too!

Do a search and you'll probably come up with a lot of info
about the 'switch'.....

Thanks for the reply and all of the great links and information.
I think that Rep. Markey is a true public servant looking out for the best interests of the people that he represents. Y'all are lucky to have him as a representative.

The "switch" issue is one that just wasn't on my radar until today. I was quite alarmed after listening to Rep. Markey's comments.

Cheers. CB

3. I've met him and while he isn't my Congressman I would have
supported him for Senator if kerry had won the Presidency

He is the son of a milkman and whenever I've seen him he mentions that in his speech

I'm not sure where his district is but I think it is North and West of Boston (if not including some parts of Boston)

Just seems like a nice guy -one more thing, I believe he's now the Dean of the MA Congressional delegation - has served the longest in his job at the Congressional level in our state

5. He's my Rep.
It's a district of towns in the Greater Boston area; I forget which district it is because I'd always been part of the historic 8th Congressional district (Tip O'Neil), then they redistricted a few years ago and put me into Markey's. But I do like him.

6. 7th I believe, and he is awesome
I live in KY, but Markey seems to be on C-Span so much I just kind of pretend he is my rep now. He really does seem to be on C- Span about every other time I turn it on, so the guy must work pretty hard. I have never seen Mike Capuano on there but I'm sure he is good if Boston elected him.

One day, I too will be in MA...

8. Capuano is no great shakes
He's my rep (and, oddly enough, my neighbor, about a block away). It's the eighth district, comprising Cambridge, Somerville, Chelsea, and big chunks of Boston. Former representatives from this district include Tip O'Neill and John F. Kennedy. Capuano is, to put it kindly, not in their league.

It was kind of a fluke how he got the job. Before this he'd been Somerville's mayor for a couple terms, and had a reputation as a martinet. When O'Neill retired, there were ten candidates in the Democratic primary to replace him, including another and better known mayor, Boston's Ray Flynn. Somehow Capuano ended up with the most votes. He hasn't made any major blunders as a rep, but he hasn't made much of a mark either. It is rumored that he may give up the seat and run for governor in 2006.

9. Not quite right.
When Speaker O'Neill retired, Joe Kennedy ran in a big field and won the primary. He served for about 10 years in Congress and left to run Citizens Oil when his brother died in a skiing accident.

This led to the next big democratic primary where Ray Flynn of South Boston, not part of the district tried his luck with the people of Cambridge, Somerville and part of Boston. Congressman Capuano was the Mayor of the largest city in the District Somerville and rolled up a very large vote total from his home town. More than enough to off set the totals of the others who split the remaining vote among many other lines.

He, Capuano does a pretty good job in Washington. He will not be running for Governor and will in a democratic majority be a pretty good Congressman
