City clerks say notices to those voting absentee changed by suit

DEARBORN HEIGHTS/DEARBORN - Dearborn City Clerk Kathy Buda and Dearborn Heights City Clerk Judy Dudzinski met Wednesday morning at Dearborn City Hall to discuss changes in the absentee voting process that could have a serious impact on voters in both cities.

"It's going to be awful," Dudzinski said. "We're going to be deluged with phone calls from residents wondering where their absentee ballots are."

In previous years, those residents that chose to vote via absentee ballot were placed on a permanent absentee voter registration list, Dudzinski said, and ballots were automatically sent out prior to the election.

That will no longer be the case, Dearborn Public Information Director Mary Laundroche said, as a recent ruling in Wayne County declared that absentee voters must now request ballots — they will no longer be sent automatically.


"They've said that we can no longer maintain the absentee voter list," Laundroche said. "This is something that's going to affect every city in Wayne County, not just Dearborn and Dearborn Heights.
