I shook hands with Gates Brown tonight
At the Tiger game.
New York won 5-1, with all five of their hits being solo home runs. Detroit only had four hits total.
It would've been a pretty boring game -- except for the part about meeting Gates Brown and shaking the hand of maybe the best pinch-hitter in American League history and most certainly the finest in Tiger history.
He looks damned good for being 65.
John
Gates started in left for the first Tiger game I ever saw (in 1968). Detroit lost that one, too, 5-3 to Baltimore with Denny McLain taking one of his six losses (against 31 wins). There seems to be some cosmic circle sort of thing going on here, except I'm way too tired and slightly too drunk to figure it out just now.

1. I was there too, but didn't see the Gator
Look on the bright side, the Tiger pitchers scattered 5 hits.

Five hits -- all taters. I don't know that I've ever been to a game before where all five of a team's hits were homers.
John
38,900 and change attended on a Thursday night. Baseball, however temporarily, is important in July in Detroit again. Sellouts are likely through the weekend.
Gator, BTW, was signing autographs over by the smoking area on the Montcalm side (behind first base). He's got a hell of a grip for an old dude.

3. Tonights game
You should have gone to the game tonight. Maroth threw a one-hitter in a 8-0 Tiger win. Wish I could've been there.
