I just saw a GREAT Granholm TV ad
Edited on Wed Sep-06-06 05:56 PM by Lefty48197
I don't think it was from the Granholm campaign it was from the "Michigan Democratic Campaign Committee", or something like that.

The ad SLAMMED DeVos. The graphics and the narrator stated that when Dick DeVos ran his Michigan comapany Amway (yup, the ad mentioned Scamway), he laid of (1300?) workers. Then he turned and opened a new factory in China and invested 200 million dollars there. (I'm paraphrasing)
Governor Granholm went to Asia and brought home 200 million dollars worth of investment from Asia, in Michigan companies.
Two different styles, two very different results. Governor Granholm...

I wish I had a link to the actual text or a video, because I think it was an EXCELLENT campaign ad. It absolutely SLAMMED DeVos, in a way that most Democrats seem too shy to do. The ad attacked Dick's "successful businessman" theme that he's using to try and bullsh*t Michigan voters. "Successful businessman MY ASS", the Granholm ad seemed to say, "You laid off Michigan workers and then built a factory in China", it concluded.

2. i saw that one too
they are finally starting to get out some excellent "fight back" but not dirty/mud slinging ads for the Governor.

I've seen a couple ads that I liked for Debbie Stabenow too.

5. DeVos on Scamway/China
Of course DeVos is now doing anything in his power to downplay the Scamway/China connection. I bet he wishes he could retract his statement from The Grand Rapids Press:

About 80 percent of Alticor's (Amway's) business comes from overseas. "We're basically an Asian company," he said, noting that a majority of their business is in countries such as Japan and China.

Ironic for a company whose name is supposed to be shorthand for the "American way."

6. 'We make products in China, because their laws require it'
Edited on Thu Sep-07-06 08:53 PM by Lefty48197
Imagine that, China required that products sold in China, be manufactured in China. Amway figures, as long as they have factories there, they might as well ship American jobs over there, since America doesn't have any laws like that...

7. A Few Great Recent Granholm Ads
There have been two recent "slam DeVos" ads that are really fabulous, and a slightly earlier ad just showing Granholm telling a little about her background and pledge to continue that work. These ads, finally, are really hard-hitting, have real content, come out swinging, and are exciting and great. Also, finally, they are playing several times a day. I taped these, (starting with the two recent "slam DeVos" ones):

The "comparison" ad--(Ad shows text on screen, as narrator says:)
After Dick DeVos laid off nearly 1400 workers at Amway, his company in Michigan, (Detroit Free Press, July 19, 2005)
he went to Asia
He invested $200 million in China (Grand Rapids Business Journal, October 27, 2005)
(now a video shows on screen, with caption, "Amway factory workers Guangdong, China 2003")
and even opened up a factory, creating thousands of jobs there (South China Morning Post, February 14, 2004)
(video again of Amway factory workers, Guangdong, China 2003; captioned)
(then shows Granholm)
Governor Jennifer Granholm traveled to Asia
over $200 million in new investments for Michigan (Detroit News, May 19, 2006)
and over 1000 new Michigan jobs. (Detroit News May 19, 2006)
Two plans Two results One huge difference
Paid for by Michigan Democratic State Central Committee

The new "The truth about DeVos"/"The worse it gets" ad:
(narration and text on screen, w/ DeVos background, talking onscreen, but mercifully silent:)
The Truth about Dick DeVos and China?
Finally, Dick DeVos admitted he cut Michigan jobs and created jobs in China (WILX TV interview September 6, 2006)
Fact: "During DeVos' tenure at Alticor, the company laid off 1,400 workers in Michigan and invested $200 million in China." The Detroit News August 14, 2006
Fact: (narrator says "he," quote says "we") "we invested $200 million in China" Dick DeVos Published letter from Dick DeVos in the Detroit News May 17, 2006
Fact: He built a factory there and created thousands of jobs for China -Dick DeVos TV ad September 7, 2006 Alticor Media Blog April 13, 2006
Is that what Michigan needs?
Dick DeVos The more you know The worse it gets
Paid for and Authorized by Jennifer M. Granholm for Governor

There is also a really good one that has been running a little longer, showing Granholm, just talking directly to the camera:
"I've put criminals who abuse the elderly in nursing homes behind bars. As a Federal prosecutor, I convicted kidnappers, and drug dealers, and child pornographers... And now as Governor, I've signed into law mandatory criminal background checks for anyone working in nursing homes and child care centers. The world is no longer simple--and that means we have to fight with everything we've got, to protect..our..families." Paid for and Authorized by Jennifer M. Granholm for Governor

I like that one because it reminds people of Granholm's great background as Michigan Attorney General, and before that, the top lawyer in Frank Kelly's Attorney General office. Also, the "jobs" ad referring to the comparison between Granholm and DeVos might mention that Granholm has increased jobs in Michigan, while the National economy, under Bush and Cheney (and Halliburton, Enron, etc.), has LOST net jobs, so she has a better record than the economy as a whole. There is also a wild ad from I don't know who, very snide and sarcastic, showing the Michigan Legislature as a bunch of Republican elephant heads, allowing the import of Canadian garbage, and I can't remember what else, with that horrible '80s overly sarcastic, mocking voice, annoying "music," etc. Although the message is accurate, I can't stand that mocking tone, which only makes me hate the speaker, whoever it is. The Granholm/Michigan Dems ads, though, are really great--a lot of real content.

I have also caught a few nice Stabenow ads, very low-key and only informative because I think she is so far ahead in the polls that she doesn't have to get critical. One of them is Stabenow telling of some of her accomplishments and what she plans to continue fighting for, but there is also another, really good one that I have caught twice (don't have on tape). It features a head of a manufacturing corporation telling how China steals patents, I think it was, and blasting the Bush Administration, who "wouldn't help," but "Stabenow did," and got legislation passed that would help Michigan manufacturing businesses and jobs, by cracking down on this global corporate crime. It was a manufacturer, a "business type," telling how disastrous and unhelpful the Bush Administration has been to us here in Michigan, how Stabenow actually solved the problem, and how she is good for businesses and jobs here. Nice angle. I do not agree with everything Stabenow does by a long shot--(she voted for the corporate bill disguised as a "Medicare" drug benefit, which I call the "Bankrupt Medicare Patients Bill," etc.)--but she is generally good. The Granholm ads, though, are fabulous; it shows the Michigan Democrats, anyway, may finally be fighting like Democrats again, and getting rid of the "D"LC nightmare.

When you enter a colon followed by a closing parenthesis, it automatically interprets it as a smiley face. the way to stop that is to check the box that says "Check if you DO NOT wish to use emotion icons in your message" (above the subject line).

10. I'm glad you told me this. I just moved here, and
all I've seen are DeVos adds, basically saying, "I'll be good at keeping jobs here in Michigan." I figured that he was a lying piece of shit, because he had an R after his name. I was going to start a thread asking people to let me know what his bullshit was, so I would have my talking points for any Republican who starts praising DeVos. But you just told me everything I need to know, thanks!

16. The New Lying DeVos Ad
Hi, blue4barb. I just happened to get this latest DeVos filth on tape because I was taping, I admit it, today's "Oprah." Here are my notes from it:

(voice-over, DeVos; while showing empty factory on screen--hey, maybe it's Amway!) "Michigan's still losing jobs. Governor Granholm's response?"
(now shows a bizarrely grinning DeVos) "Negative attacks. It's too bad. Our company never sent a single American job to China--not one." (now shows newspaper onscreen: "Michigan Could Learn from DeVos' China Experience" Detroit News, Editor, 4/20/06 Nolan Finley)
DeVos: "We built a plant in China to make products we sell in China" (now adds second newspaper quote onscreen) "...The Chinese government requires it." Lansing State Journal Column, 8/31/05 Chris Andrews) "That's what their law requires."
(shows active plant) "We're selling Michigan-made products in over 70 countries. That's how we saved 4000 Michigan jobs."
(shows DeVos again, both close-up alone, and a very uncomfortable-looking shot of DeVos in the plant with "employees") "Political attacks aren't what I'm really worried about. I want us to compete with the world for more Michigan jobs." Paid for and Authorized by Dick DeVos for Governor

A few opinions: First, you know that this liar is just playing with words, and the whole solution rests on what phraseology is being screwed around with. For example, they did not "move" "American" jobs, because they outsourced the whole plant, and so therefore they were not "American" but Chinese jobs, etc. Notice also that DeVos can never provide proof af any of these claims--I have never seen a single DeVos news article refuting anything; they are always, only, opinion columns, which of course prove nothing. Second, the weird grin DeVos has the whole time looks like nothing so mauch as one of these, "I am even more of a criminal than you will ever know or can prove." I hope it comes across that way to others; that is what it is. Finally, the very strange and scary last line, which comes across as something very different from what they were pretending: It is as if, "I want us to have to compete now with the whole world-economy for our Michigan jobs." Everything, Amway-like, will be deregulated, outsourced, downsized, and you peons will be fighting--for your lives--with the whole rest of the world now, for what was once your own job. I hope the Granholm campaign picks up on this threat and can use it.

17. Thanks for the transcript of his latest repulsive ad...
And I enjoyed reading your thoughts, Hidden Stillness, and interpretations. I agree that both his grin and voice are very slimy. He does NOT come across as honest and sincere, but rather a snake in oil squirming his way through his words and phrases to try to spin everything to his advantage.

I saw Granholm's "Fact" ad you mentioned above and loved it. Thanks for all the info in this thread on her ads.

19. Now An Even Newer Granholm Answer Ad
There is now an even newer Granholm ad, answering the recent "DeVos jobs-maker" lies; here are my notes:

(Screen shows a snapshot of DeVos, in a suit, looking away from camera, with handwritten caption on pic, "Dick DeVos--Jobs Maker?") Narration: Dick DeVos says he's a jobs maker.
For China, maybe. DeVos cut jobs in Michigan (The Detroit News, August 24, 2006)
but invested $200 million (Dick DeVos, The Detroit News, May 17, 2006; Alticor Media Blog, April 13, 2006)
and created thousands of jobs (Dick DeVos, The Detroit News, May 17, 2006; Alticor Media Blog, April 13, 2006)
in China (Dick DeVos, The Detroit News, May 17, 2006; Alticor Media Blog, April 13, 2006)

(Now shows live-video of Granholm; as narration goes on, she will be shown walking down a hall with a group, discussing and planning; talking with citizens; talking on a phone in her office; at a meeting; and on a cell phone in the BACK SEAT of a car, unlike DeVos) Narration: Governor Jennifer Granholm is going anywhere, doing anything, to bring jobs to Michigan. In two trips to Asia, (www.GranholmJobsPlan.com/Japan )
she's brought home over $200 million in new investments (Detroit News, May 19, 2006)
and over 1000 new Michigan jobs (Detroit News, May 19, 2006)
So-- (now to text on screen)
Who's the real Michigan jobs maker?
Paid for and Authorized by Jennifer M. Granholm for Governor

What is really great about these ads, apart from the fact that they hit the mark, is that they are answering things immediately and hitting back, immediately. Very impressive. This is going to be a needlessly expensive race, because of DeVos, but that being the case, you have to answer every one of the lies--and they are.

22. Great New Granholm Answer-Ad
Just caught a really good Granholm "answer ad" for the first time yesterday; it seems to be the most recent. Granholm is facing the camera and speaking directly to the audience the whole time (always effective):

Granholm: "Ford's announcement last week hit hard. My Administration is taking action, to offer workers the opportunity for retraining, education for new jobs, and to help our people afford health care, while the auto industry re-tools, to compete. And I'm working the most aggressive plan in the Nation, to diversify this economy. There's a lot more to do. But no one'll work harder to go anywhere and do anything, to bring jobs to Michigan. No one." (While she is speaking, the web address www.michigan.gov/newjob appears across the bottom of the screen; to give more information.) Paid for and Authorized by Jennifer M. Granholm for Governor.

This is good for two reasons: First, it tells what Granholm has been doing as the economy has been getting worse, sliding toward Depression because of unstoppable Republican greed, crime, and deregulation. This is all going to become even more important, as the foundations of the economy collapse completely, from the National/Bush Admin./neocon globalists and their "policies," and, second, it answers some of these DeVos ads that claim that Granholm is "responsible" for the (national, remember) recession, and is doing nothing. Granholm and her Administration are among the best for getting new businesses and Government grants, research programs, and etc., here, and it should be kept public. She is doing a lot.

Devos, meanwhile, has a few weird new ads, (mentioned on other threads), one of which uses this routine of tying all the job losses, bankruptcies, plant closures, and etc., to Granholm, and after every claim of disaster happening here, there is a completely bizarre tag line, "and Governor Granholm says, 'Stay the course.' " Things are pretty desperate for their group when the smear they consider the most effective for their side, is to try to connect you with--their President! I hope people will easily respond common-sensically, "...But that's YOUR side's line, DeVos you asshole."
