Anyone else seeing the new, glowing TV ads for Amway?
Or are we the only lucky ones here in West Michigan?

I can't recall EVER having seen an Amway commercial on TV until the last month. Now, every morning and evening I am "treated" to a 60-second gush fest from shiny, happy people (presumably Amway employees) about what a wonderful company Amway is and how lucky employees are to be working there.

Why does the timing of these ads seem highly suspicious to me?

1. I see them too
I see them too, many times I have seen them back to back with Devos ads. Those people look 'assimilated'. The ending seems offensive too, with the guy saying 'you got a problem with that?' Well, apparently I do have a problem with that.

Also, first post. Great site!!!

2. Me too! I have a big problem with DeVos and Amway schemes.
I think that guy at the end of the commercial is trying to sound intimidating. I don't know why they think that will encourage voters to their side.

Welcome to DU, steveranger!

3. I'm watching one right now
Yech! Such happy smiling faces. I wonder if they'd be so happy and smiling if they were at the bottom of the pyramid rather than working in the plants.

5. Alticor doesn't hire real employees...
Edited on Sun Sep-24-06 02:43 PM by indigonation
they use 70% Manpower so they don't have to pay benefits, and then can them after 1 year, re-train all new ones. It used to be three years, until Granholm put a 1-year cap on hiring temp workers to get out of hiring full-time regular employees.

I just found this out from a group of people that used to work there in the call center. They also told me that even slipping up and using the word "Amway" by mistake was grounds for immediate termination.

These people weren't even really political, but they were definitely voting against DeVos.

I wish someone from the Michigan DNC would check this out, and put out an ad to counter Scamway Dick's "job-maker" baloney.

6. Those ads have been running for a few weeks now
I knew what was up from the very first one.

It is just me, or is DeVos' campaign kind of lame?

9. Employers Who Force the Workers to Praise Them Publicly....
These ads are so excessively chipper, with crowds of people talking about Amway as if it were a God-damned party or social club, ("I met my husband there!" "I met my wife there!" whatever), that it just screams either, 1) They are actors, not real employees, or, 2) "You make this ad or you're fired." I think the "my workers love their workplace, and here they are to tell you, with cameras and microphones on them" corporate presentation always comes across badly, forced, which is fine with me.

It reminds me of a case about fifteen years ago--something like that--where Mitsubishi of America had a rebellion among its women employees, going public and filing charges that they were sexually harrassed and discriminated against by management, many of whom were direct from Japan. Then suddenly, out of nowhere, there was this large "We Support Mitsubishi" rally and march to the State capitol of California or whatever it was, with the claim that any complaints against the corporation were "ridiculous." They had signs about how "wonderful" Mitsubishi was, badmouthed the women employees filing the lawsuit, and gave speeches with remarkably similar statements--and no criticism whatsoever. Later, it came out that the entire workforce was threatened by management that they had better participate toward this cover-up, that if they went to the rally, they would be paid, that those who did not would have their names taken down, etc. Workers who are made to cheerlead the wealthy boss always disgusts me; immoral shit.
