Congrats Tigers Fans!
I've just been riding the wave with my daughter the Tiger/Ordonez fan and I find myself very happy for this team and their coach. Brandon Inge made me get all verklempt last night with his interview. It's given my daughter and I something to bond over. :D :toast:

1. That sure was a nice celebration

It was a sad thing to see the Tigers down all those years. The Tigers have a rich tradition and they deserve respect just like our city deserves respect. The emotion in that locker room among old timers like Illitch and Leyland and even Todd Jones was a reflection of that. Those three guys believed in the Tigers and believed that Detroit was a good baseball town when not many other people did anymore and they deserve this day. I hate it when people speaking to national audiences show no respect for our city and more than any other team I associate the Tigers with the city.

What a great day. Made me completely forget getting rained on all night on Saturday in East Lansing watching the Spartans collapse and ruin yet another opportunity to make their football program relevant.

2. It's funny because the Tigers are the only Detroit team that
I ever cared about (I'm from WI by birth-Go Pack-). I vowed to never watch baseball again after the strike and the screwing over of the replacement players. My daughter and her love of the game (she plays softball and enjoys being a fan) brought me back. Like I said, I ride the wave because of her...I owe the Tigers at least that...they've helped my relationship with her. But, boy did I get teary eyed listening to Todd Jones last night. The look on Magglio's face (knowing how he cried watching the White Sox go without him last year) also broke me up.

Way to go, Strawman...Enjoy it.

I hope we have several celebrations yet to go over the next month or so.

6. Yeah -- the DeVos curse lives on.
Glad he wasn't in Ann Arbor.

7. LOL. Well, as much as I'd like to believe that Devos was responsible
They have had a knack for these kinds of collapses for awhile now. Even back when Dick was with the Magic trading Ben Wallace to the Pistons for Grant Hill. What a brilliant trade that ended up being for the Magic. Best thing he'll ever do for Metro Detroit.

9. It's a coaching problem, IMHO.
I am a bit Stantoncentric, as he is from my high school alma mater. I cannot blame the two pics he threw in the 4th, although that did not help. The problem I see stems from stuff out of the coaching department that started last year.

Here's the thing: Leland is successful because the main thing he works into this Tiger team is "give me none solid innings." That's all he asks. He seems to play manager at the right times, and in the right places. John L. (I don't completely dislike the man, but....) and his staff seem to make really stupid coaching decisions in terms of play calling, etc.

Yeah, and there is the DeVos curse. Oh well...

10. It's an entire culture of mediocrity
Edited on Wed Sep-27-06 11:13 AM by Strawman
The same people up in the suites have been exerting influence over a losing program for years and as long as they keep their influence they don't care. It's bigger than John L. Smith. It goes back to meddling by the trustees, the Perles and DiBiaggio power struggle, McPherson's hasty and incompetent decision to name Bobby Williams the coachetc. etc.. It's a crappy culture of fat and contented mediocrity that surrounds the powers that be that control that program. I don't know the answer, but I'd like to see everyone swept out of there and a clean slate of new Democrats take over. What's confounding is that some of the people responsible are Democrats and there are more important things to consider when you vote for trustees than the football program. It's just a bad situation.

Anyway, this thread was supposed to be about the Tigers (who are awesome). I'm sorry I even brought this up here.

5. Yay! Wish I could have seen the celebration
but ESPN in their wisdom chose to deprive me of that scene. I wrote them an email. Does anyone have a phone number for them?
