Nice letter to the Cadillac Evening News, thought I'd share.
Over the past 4 or 5 decades residents of Ada, MI have had much exposure to the VanAndel and DeVos families. Simple observation confirms that gubernatorial candidate Dick DeVos grew up in the isolated world of a billionaire, replete with bodyguards, chauffeurs, private Christian schools, a fleet of luxury cars, private aircraft, and mansions. Raised by father Rich DeVos, Dick was exposed to strong opinions and Dad's absence of perspective when leveraging his donations to impose personal philosophies on local institutions. Rich provided son Dick with a path to live by that minimized the necessity for decision-making or independence. Dick DeVos served the family work ethic by doing his rotation (while a student) through various departments at Amway. Later in life Dick did his rotation in the family business as company President, supported by an experienced professional staff that managed the company in his name. Dick’s a nice person, I’m told. An evangelical Christian, he passionately supports the use of public tax monies for private and religious education and uses some of his billions to promote the teaching of biblical creationism in public schools. I’ve seen and heard him take personal credit for the revitalization of downtown Grand Rapids and for bringing the West Michigan Whitecaps to Grand Rapids. DeVos family money has been a great boon to West Michigan (although I miss seeing the new DeVos Public High School). None of these things should be held against him. After all, he doesn’t wear a helmet while riding his motorcycle and expresses “ I didn’t have the benefit of a Harvard education”. Granholm has on-the-street exposure to life as a citizen of Michigan and experience as a governor. Plus – she DOES have the benefit of a Harvard education. Seldom has a voting decision been easier to make. Michael J. May Ada Township, MI
