First Incumbent St. Paul Mayor to Get Beat Since 1974
St. Paul mayoral race: Coleman defeats Kelly

St. Paul voters punished Mayor Randy Kelly today for standing with President Bush a year ago, denying the Democrat a second term in Minnesota's capital city. Former City Council member Chris Coleman, also a Democrat, routed Kelly by a more than 2-1 margin in unofficial returns with most precincts reporting.

Take that, you Mayberry Machiavellian corrupt kakistocrats.

19. 1970–1974, Charles P. McCarty. 1974–1976, Lawrence D. Cohen
I can't believe it, but the Wikipedia site is already updated with Chris Coleman's name.

22. I have to admit, I wasn't around back then
I was careening around the jackpine forests of north central Wisconsin as a wayward teen in 1974.

28. Yes, Chris has to be careful not to be confused with the previous
mayor, who was a Democrat then

6. Absolutely the dumbest thing any mayor of St. Paul ever did.
What was Kelly thinking? It's not like the election was going to swing on who the mayor of a large-ish Midwestern city endorsed. He could have kept his mouth shut and probably would have won tonight. Dumb, dumb, dumb. A well-deserved (and self-inflicted) throttling.

16. Uh, I'm not sure on that.
After all, we did have Normie as a Mayor so Kelly had some stiff competition in the "dumb" department. :7

But you bring up an interesting point. If Kelly hadn't endorsed Dubya, would he have really have won re-election? Anyone out there have any idea of how popular Kelly was with Saint Paulites before the endorsement? I'm not a good one to judge this as I have never liked him. I voted against him last time and would have voted against him again this time regardless. So if anyone out there has a better grasp of where Kelly stood prior to endorsing Dubya, please feel free to throw in your .02.

30. If he hadn't endorsed Bush, he would have been reelected
The other things he had done were not so egregious that enough people would have paid attention to the election to drive him out.

12. Here's a nice quote from the Star Trib article.
"Kelly found it impossible to change the topic in the campaign's final weeks. He tried to tout his record of adding affordable housing while keeping property taxes steady, and the mayor sought to paint Coleman as a tax-raiser beholden to public employee unions."

Kelly claims he has a record of keeping property taxes steady??? WTF? What about the friggin' proposed 20% increase I'm looking at? And how much did they go up last year? And the year before? Un, ex-Mayor Kelly, would you please give me your definition of "steady?" If "steady" means "going through the roof", well, then yeah, I guess you've held property taxes "steady." Asshat. Good riddance.

I bet Coleman gets blamed for the upcoming property tax increase, even though it happened on Randy Quisling Kelly's non-watch.

17. Ah, what fond memories.
I believe I was outside protesting the fact that Dubya was allowed to set foot in MN. There should be laws against that. Yes, this is a free country but as Dubya himself said, "there should be limits to freedom." Bwahahaha! I can only hope that Fitzgerald will set some limits on the freedom of Dubya and his entire cabal. I'd say life without parole would be a good start.

23. St. Paul doesn't buy the BFEE slime machine, thank goodness
Hey Randy Kelly, are you surprised that the voters rejected a Pharisee-based religion, forced reallocation of wealth upward, and the misuse of our armed forces in corporate pirating of other nations' resources?

If you are, you're as stupid as Fortunate Son and the other mobsters you seem to like so much.

that it wouldn't come back to bite him in the ass!

That shows how short-sighted, self-involved, and out-of-touch with the people he governed he really is.
