Received this email today from WAMM of MN:
Students and Parents of Students in Grades 11 and 12 (GIRLS included) DON'T KILL! DON'T DIE! OPT OUT! Stop Your School from Supplying Private Information to Military Recruiters
See the form listed below or download the attachment above. In accordance with the federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (relevant details can be found this specific section), high schools are required to release the names, addresses and telephone numbers of students in grades 11 and 12 to military recruiters, unless the parents have refused to release this data to military recruiting officers. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act protects the privacy of student education records. In addition, the state of Minnesota has amended its state statute as follows: "A secondary institution shall release to military recruiting officers the names, addresses and home telephone numbers of students in grades 11 and 12 within 60 days after the date of the request, except as otherwise provided by this subdivision. A secondary institution shall give parents and students notice of the right to refuse release of this data to military recruiting officers. Notice may be given by any means reasonably likely to inform the parents and students of the rightŠ." To see the statute online, go here and scroll to scroll down to Subd 5a MILITARY RECRUITMENT of Minn.Stat. 13.32.
As stated above, in accordance with the Minnesota State Statute, schools should be notifying parents and students. However, the method of notification is up to each school district and how the school district notifies may not be obvious and will vary from district to district. In addition, it is important to note that schools maintain student information in their databases. Military recruiters come to high schools in September to collect student information so it is important to sign this form and deliver to your school immediately in order to give school administrations time to delete names.
No gender distinction is made in the definition of "student." Girls and their parents will also want to sign the form below, if they do not want their information released to the military. If a student didn't opt out in 11th grade, he/she can still opt out in 12th grade. Students age 18 and over can make the request themselves.
This form is specific only to opting out of having your student's school provide information directly to military recruiters.
This message is from The Twin Cities Counter-Recruitment Coalition.
