Enviros should support Nelson-Pallmeyer for Senate
For environmentalists, Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer is the candidate to support in the U.S. Senate race. Because the two leading DFL candidates for U.S. Senate seem to be in a race to the bottom to see who can most appease the timber and mining interests up north.

Mike Ciresi led the way with his endorsements from State Sen. Tom "An ATV On Every Trail" Bakk and State Rep. David Dill, both of them pathetic anti-enviros. Bakk said he met with Ciresi last summer. "We talked about mining and logging and land use issues. I’m comfortable where he will fall on those issues in the Senate," he said. Say no more.

Now along comes Al Franken, whose campaign mouthpiece is telling folks on the Iron Range that Al neither seeks the Sierra Club’s endorsement nor supports any positions the club might have taken against mining projects on the Iron Range.

Oh really, Al? And the difference between you and Ciresi is what then? I wonder if either of them has bothered to read this:

Either way, it’s too late for my vote for either of them.

1. Correction...
Everyone should vote Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer for Senate.

Jack vocally opposed the Iraq war, and is the only one on record doing so. Where is Ciresi 'on the record' opposing the war? I have not seen it, and if someone has proof send me a message. I think he is trying to play the “I opposed it, trust me” ala Amy Klobuchar. Al Franken is on both sides of the war at the start.

Jack Nellson-Pallmeyer was a policy advisor to Senator Paul Wellstone! What an honor that is that Paul Wellstone runs ideas past Jack and vice versa!

Jack opposes new coal plants, until we can find ways to sequester the carbon. Coal plants are fine for the other two, along with nuclear power. If they are willing to give into to the energy companies now, where will they put the foot down? Drilling in ANWR?

Jack has the most experience of the 3 main in foreign policy, and has been involved in all kinds of projects to end world hunger.

Jack uses the values of his faith and sets them into action with a progressive agenda. Faith may not be an issue to a lot of people but it can be a deal breaker for some.

No matter the issue, Jack leads.

2. Obama and Clinton campaigns can meet with Sierra Club, but Franken and Ciresi snub them?
http://action.sierraclub.org/site/PageNavigator/TownHall2008?JServSessionIdr004=6cyadsgg11.app24a

On Wednesday, January 30, Sierra Club members at hundreds of locations around the country joined a teleconferenced Town Hall Meeting to hear from the Presidential campaigns of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama (all of the Presidential campaigns were invited to participate).

In addition to hearing pre-recorded statements from the candidates, Sierra Club members got answers to questions they'd submitted answered by former EPA Administrator Carol Browner (representing Senator Clinton) and prominent Midwestern environmental attorney Howard Learner (representing Senator Obama). The Sierra Club's Political Director, Cathy Duval, and National Political Committee Chair, Jonathan Ela, moderated the meeting.

:wtf:

3. Were they invited? Or just the presidential candidates?

4. At this point neither Franken nor Ciresi have expressed any interest in the Sierra Club
In fact, their campaigns' statements sound downright hostile to the Sierra Club.

This particular event was just for presidential candidates.

5. But they didn't *snub* the Sierra Club if they weren't invited in the first place.
It's entirely fair to ask for straight answers from them on environmental issues, but it isn't fair to say they snubbed the Sierra Club for not showing up at an event they weren't invited to.

6. You're missing the point
Go back and read the original post. The presidential Sierra Club event was an aside. Al Franken's mouthpiece says Franken isn't seeking the Sierra Club's endorsement and doesn't agree with ANY of their positions opposing Iron Range mining. Mike Ciresi's campaign expressed similar disparaging views about the Sierra Club, and has been endorsed by anti-environment Iron Range legislators like Bakk and Dill.

I'm sick of politicians selling out the environment in order to curry favor with anti-environment Iron Rangers. If they think they can go after the progressive enviro vote in the Twin Cities, and then talk that shit on the Iron Range, fine. There's a third candidate and he's getting my support Tuesday.

7. I'm not arguing the basic point of the OP. I do agree that all the candidates
(and I haven't decided on one yet) have to address these issues. I was merely pointing out the inaccuracy of the statement that they snubbed the Sierra Club *by not showing up at an event they weren't invited to.* If they're blowing off the SC by declining to talk to them at all, that's a separate question, and a completely fair one.

8. Franken snubbed the Sierra Club again two days ago
Looks like Al wants to have his enviromentalist cake and eat it too. He talks big about his enviro credentials when he's among Twin Cities crowds or when he's trying to raise money, and then talks trash about them on the Iron Range.

When asked about a State Rep. Dave Dill's claim that Franken intended to seek the Sierra Club's endorsement, Franken responded: “I just don’t think he heard me right. I was talking with him while he was at a shooting competition with his son. I don’t intend to seek the Sierra Club endorsement,” Franken said.

Al doesn't sound much different than Norm Coleman if you ask me.

He's the best candidate of the three.
