Question regarding the GOP convention.
I just read _here_ that residents of St. Paul are being told that they have to plant red, white, and blue flowers, and every home has to have an American flag in the front yard, and a list of other things for the convention.

:wtf: Is this for real?

I'd love to see the original newspaper item the blogger mentions and/or comments from the governor, who apparently ordered this.

I'm not a Minnesotan, so I'm really curious. Are these just suggestions or are people being going to be cited for not complying? I've never heard of such a thing!

5. Good.
I was imagining just how nightmarish things would get with trying to enforce this if it was real.

Thanks! :hi:

2. "Homie don't play that . . . "
No cite in the article. I seriously doubt it's true.
I thought only right-wing blogs and pundits made shit up. I don't tolerate that from either side.

6. I wouldn't play that, either!
I could see an editorial encouraging city pride or something like that, but an order from the governor seemed really out there.

Thanks. :hi:

3. Not true--merely a suggestion
Thug Radio like KTLK does enough of this kind of exaggeration. It doesn't serve the left well to follow suit.

Just what we need, to convince these pseudo-con nutballs even more than they already are, that everything is just rosy in the USA

7. Now THAT makes sense!
A contest with photos and prizes for the best sprucing up job... civic pride and all that, encouraged by the Mayor... a great idea.

Where that one person got the idea it was a mandatory order from the governor is beyond me.

Thanks for the real story! :hi:

8. I live less than 1 mile in a straight line from the convention location...
In a nice part of town, and I can unequivocally tell you NO, that has not been mandated. AND if it were, there would be a revolt, this is probably the MOST Democratic District in the STATE of MN.

14. Is there some way we could arrange a mass mooning?
I love the idea of all those Republicans riding in limos and taxis to the convention center, and all the streets are lined with thousands of people mooning them.

12. Already seeing graffiti against RNC and GOP
I can't image what is going to look like in a couple more weeks. The Republicans are really hated in St Paul and Minneapolis. There is going to be a lot of graffiti w/IMPEACH and bring the troops home.. end the war.

They were idiots to have their convention here

MINNEAPOLIS SAINT PAUL 2008 HOST COMMITTEE AND MAYORS
LAUNCH SPRUCE UP MSP CAMPAIGN
Metro-Wide Clean-Up Day Planned and “Spruced Up” Photo Contest Announced

MINNEAPOLIS SAINT PAUL, MINN. (July 28, 2008) – Local dignitaries are asking residents and
businesses to paint, primp and plant flowers in preparation for the 45,000 visitors expected for the 2008
Republican National Convention as part of the Spruce Up MSP campaign.

The campaign was launched today at a press conference by Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak, Saint Paul
Deputy Mayor Ann Mulholland, Cynthia Lesher, President of the Minneapolis Saint Paul 2008 Host
Committee and Pam Wheelock, Executive Vice President and CFO of Xcel Energy Center. The group also
unveiled a reward package that will be given to the Minnesotan who shows the most spruce up spirit
through the “Spruced Up” photo contest, which will be featured on the Host Committee web site
www.msp2008.com.

“This convention provides each and every Minnesotan with the unique opportunity to showcase to the
nation and the world what we already know – that this is truly a wonderful place to live, work, vacation and
raise a family,” said Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak. “During the month of August we are asking all our
residents to join this effort by putting a little extra sparkle in our homes and businesses as we welcome the
convention visitors to our beautiful cities.”

Local residents are invited to participate in several events including Spruce Up Volunteer Day on Saturday,
August 16 when the Mayors of Minneapolis, Saint Paul and Bloomington as well as thousands of
volunteers will participate in an area-wide effort to clean and polish windows, streets, parks and green
spaces.

“The eyes of the nation and the world will soon be upon us and it is time for all of us to do our part to
prepare to host this historic event,” said Saint Paul Mayor Chris Coleman. “This is a tremendous
opportunity for our cities as well as our residents, who have the opportunity to not only spruce up our area
but also to participate in several events that will be held in conjunction with the Convention.”

Individuals who choose to spruce up their homes and businesses will have an opportunity to submit a photo
and win a Red Carpet Convention Package that includes a pair of tickets to three of the best parties during
the Convention including the media party and the delegate welcome party. To participate in the “Spruced
Up” photo contest, people should submit photos of their “spruced up” spaces to photos@msp2008.com.
Photos will be judged by a representative from the Host Committee and the cities of Minneapolis, Saint
Paul and Bloomington.

“Our months of planning for this historic event are about to come to an end as we enter the home stretch
and put out the welcome mat,” said Cynthia Lesher, president of Minneapolis Saint Paul 2008 Host
Committee. “We look forward to seeing how Minnesotans will demonstrate their spruce up spirit.”

Residents and business owners are invited to spruce up their spaces by doing the following:

17. no one said they had to. in fact....
i asked the mayor of the third twin city about it.
they're not going along.
they will try to get a couple of street projects done before the convo so they can get around easier.
it means a few hours of overtime for the street crews, that's all.
the GOP is tossing out a lot of silly junk right now and somehow i got on a mailing list. if you're interested i will post some of it.

did you know, for example, that UPS is the 'official' delivery service of the GOP convention? don't know how much they had to pay for that...

and...i don't mean to be flippant. there will be many serious issues to discuss here before and during the convention.

by the way, did I see Walser (big auto dealership) advertising on DU!?!?!?
i did! good for them!

19. No need to post more info on it.
I just couldn't believe my eyes when I read that blog post about mandates and had to find out the truth from Minnesotans who'd know.

I hope the street crews DO get some OT out of all this! Thanks for the additional input. :hi:
