Strib article -- Suburbs now awash in fees
This was published on the 26th:

Two years ago, after a state budget crunch squeezed the finances of many local communities, city officials warned that a wave of rising fees would follow.

They weren't kidding.

A deluge of charges -- from "cul-de-sac fees" to "swimming-pool fees" -- has tensions building in the suburbs, especially fast-growing areas.

<snip>

Many outside experts support the cities. Some say it's about time that the people responsible for low-density urban sprawl paid a greater share of the costs. And they note that there is some poetic justice in that many of the sharpest fee increases have been imposed in the same zones of suburbia that elected legislators against raising taxes.

"All this stacking on of fees," University of Minnesota sprawl expert John Adams said, "is nothing more a desperate act to raise revenues in the face of state aid drying up. And the people who voted for 'no new taxes' are the same ones now bellying up to pay these fees."

Looks like the state budget crunch is finally reaching the "red" suburbs. Fine with me. Let them eat "fees" -- serves the selfish, greedy bastards right.

and laughed. Gotta make up the money somehow! Sorry burbs!

I'm so glad light rail seems to be doing well here in Mpls. I'd love to see more people moving back to the cities. I could have a house twice the size I have now but right now if I moved out of Mpls. I'm 2 blocks from a grocery store, restaurants, movie theater, shops, etc etc. and have a 10 minute commute.

Enjoy your 3 hour drives to work this winter... maybe you can use the time to think about what your vote got you!

3. Happening here in my small city, too...
Just this past year they added a "sewer run-off fee", basically charging us for the run-off from our property into the sewers, of rain and melting snow. It's about $7/mo.

I ask my repug friends how much of a hit that is to their huge tax cut. No comment.

Dumbasses.

5. And don't forget the fees school districts had to raise
for extracurricular activities.
