Minnesota's senator takes on the president's mouthpiece

In response to the Jan. 27 letter writer who claimed Sen. Mark Dayton "disgraced" Minnesota with his vote against Condoleezza Rice's confirmation, it is Dr. Rice and the other planners of the bungled war in Iraq who have disgraced the United States.

I would like to thank Dayton for his vote and also for the courage to call Rice's actions by their real names instead of the usual euphemisms. Though obviously intelligent, Rice has lied about the war in Iraq and the reasons for going there. Why are we more angry about the people who point out the lies rather than the lies themselves?

I am proud that Minnesota has at least one senator who stands up for his convictions instead of just safeguarding his Washington political career.

Stacy Hannigan, Coon Rapids.

I don't know why the hallmark of the Bush administration is the pathological reward of failure as a means of ensuring future failure, but I do know that George W. Bush lied us into an unsustainable and unjustified war in Iraq, and that Condi Rice was his chief mouthpiece hawking his blood feud with Saddam Hussein.

Not only did Rice fail, as the national security adviser, to keep us safe on Sept. 11, 2001, she has consistently sought lying as a means of keeping the Bush administration solvent.

Thank you, Senator Dayton, for telling the truth about Rice and her lies.

Dan Brown, St. Paul.

4. She was in charge of national security during the worst
national security failure in our history, so Bush gave her a promotion.

Bush rewards failure, because he's constantly failed and been rewarded himself.

6. Wow! I never thought of it like that.
But, oh so true. What a pattern the USA has itself intertwined with in bush's behaviour!

5. Email links for the thirteen senators here...
Here is a list of the 13 Senators who voted against Rice with their email addys. If you have time, send a line or two saying thanks. We need to keep them confident that a lot of us are behind them. That's what gives them the strength to speak out as forcefully as Sen. Dayton and Sen. Boxer have been doing.

7. It's so ironic that Jeffords voted "No" on
rice and the Democrat from Vermont, Senator Pat Leahy, voted "yes".

11. Mark Dayton has (finally) earned my vote.
As opposed to me simply voting for him as a matter of course because he's a dem.
