That's the Sculpture Garden side of the bridge.

Here's the original announcement:

The local rally will gather at 1:00 PM at Loring Park in Minneapolis

1:00 - meet up, gather along Lyndale/Hennepin Aves. Be part of a massive anti-war presence.

A closing rally will be held at a nearby indoor location.

1. You're talking about the pedestrian bridge over Hennepin?

5. The meeting place isn't IN Loring Park
If you can find the Walker Art Center and the Guthrie, it's that side of the street. Right near the sculpture garden is a foot bridge over Hennepin. We will be meeting on the south side (Guthrie side) of the bridge.

By the way, I will have to duck out, because we've had another rehearsal scheduled for 2:00 PM. Everything's fine, but we didn't get around to practicing all the entrances and transitions, which, if you know anything about the St. John Passion, is a major deal.

6. From what direction would you be traveling?
Loring Park and the Guntrhie / Sculpture Garden are across the street from one another. The "street is actually a tangle of Lyndale and Hennepin going from downtown towards Franklin.

The protest isn't DU's only so I would guess the more the merrier.

8. So where was everybody?
I arrived at about 1PM (thanks to Metro Transit's schedule) and neither katinm nor bvar22 (the two I would have recognized) was in evidence.

I was disappointed with the turnout, although perhaps people are getting burned out on hearing the same old speeches. However, I was glad to hear all the friendly honks that people standing on the sidewalk and on the pedestrian bridge were getting. I spent some time on the bridge, waving at cars.

Since I had a rehearsal at 2PM and hadn't had time for lunch, I ran off to grab some food, but the rally had left by the time I returned.

9. I was there, and so was Mr. Dodger, taking pictures!
We waited at the foot of the bridge till 1 and figured no one was coming.

Organizers said they counted 1500. It sure felt like it. It warmed up and the sun felt great. We marched for what seemed like 45 minutes (we had two bagpipers) and then went to Wellsley (?) Church for about six speakers. All very good, especially a professor from St. Thomas.

It's 4:30 now and I just got in.

I'll get my photos loaded later on but I'm sure they won't be as good as Dodger's.

Since I'm so close to the starting point, I'll probably walk over to the St. Paul vigil at 5:45.

A great day.

the bagpipers were good. the church was good, I enjoyed the AWOL speaker a lot, but I'm part of AWOL, so I guess i'm biased. :-P

15. I love the bagpipers
I was following them for a while at the beginning of the march. They were having a blast, too, and taking pictures of the crowd.

Yes, the AWOL speaker did a great job, and she was the pinch hitter.

16. I was kind of glad she spoke instead of who they had
She's the president of AWOL, and in my opinion, probably gave a much better speech and made AWOL look a lot better to the anti-war community than the speaker they had lined up.

Also, the 15 year old Iraqi-American was wonderful.

10. Sorry I missed it
...but I was at a DFL Tech Summit, scheming with the other propeller-heads on how to use our tech skills to help the party. Turnout was at least 100 I'd bet. A very good day indeed!

11. Channel 5 just reported
the crowd was at least 1,500 at Loring Park. It was about a 10 second report.

14. I was there.
It was a bit slow getting started, but the news (Ch. 5) said there were 1,500, which wasn't bad. Once the march got started I think more people joined up. There will be more and more at every event.

35 years ago I couldn't have imagined I'd be doing this all over again.
