School Shooting at Red Lake Reservation
God. These things are happening much too frequently. Wasn't it just last week that there was a mass killing in a Wisconsin church?
This is so horrible.

The FBI and tribal officials in northern Minnesota are investigating a shooting at high school on the Red Lake Reservation.

A tribal official tells 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS that up to six people may be dead. The shooting took place some time Monday afternoon at the Red Lake High school. There are also reports of several injuries.

The North Country Regional Hospital says it has admitted four people as of this publishing, and that they expect more victims.

The shooter is in custody. The FBI in the Twin Cities plans to hold a news conference later this evening to bring new details. Stay with 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS for the very latest.

5. Wonder if that's because it's on an Indian Reservation?
No lily white children killed.

When I think of the constant live around the clock coverage of Columbine in 1999 (in a wealthy white school district), compared to the non-coverage of this story, I feel sick. Is it because the victims aren't white? Or has this kind of story just become commonplace?

6. It's on the rez. That's 100% the reason we're not hearing about it.
It's "expected" up there, because, y'know, they're all Indian and stuff. But when bored alienated lonely young white males do it, STOP THE PRESSES!

9. Yes, I saw that.
What I'm talking about it live coverage, cameras circling the school, interviewing witnesses, all in special reports that preempt other programming.

There's been nothing like that in this case.

11. Ritual sacrifice
If the subdued coverage of the recent shootings is a trend, then I hope the corporate/press whores continue it.

The sleazy so-called news/infotainers play on the hardwiring in our brains that feeds off of ritual sacrifice, which is what the slaughter of the young innocent virgins in high schools is, theater wise.

They should ax the frenzied coverage of the school shooting stuff and stop pushing the buttons in the more reptilian parts of our brains.

I don't care to watch when they toss children in the volcano anymore whether it's on an Indian reservation, on the green lawns of some school in Edina, or wherever.

14. That's not the point.
The point is the difference in press coverage between a tragedy at a school in a rich white school district and a tragedy at a school in a poor Native American school district.

15. Well it's my point...
Edited on Tue Mar-22-05 02:33 PM by suegeo
I understand what you are saying about the hype around white kids in a rich white school, versus very little here.

I hear YOUR point. Sorry I didn't acknowledge that verbally.

However, even if I see that the coverage is not equal I still stand by MY point which is: the media should not be making a circus out of ANY of these school slaying "events." It's not good for the mental health of the people who watch this crappy reporting.

But the media has in the past covered these things like the event was a sporting event/circus. That's because they know it sells shampoo, They tap into the reptile part of our brain and get a captive audience. Because there is something in our psyche that gets caught up in the blood, and the innocence.

I feel bad for the people involved. But the way media has covered these things in the past, (eg Columbine) it was like a ritual sacrifice event.

--They showed us the blood.

--They showed us the crying innocent "virgins."

I half expect them to stake a kid to a post, and chant "Kong! Kong! Kong!"

It's sick coverage, done by a sick media, in order to tap into a sick part of our past.

My point is (without, sincerely, trying to damage YOUR point): I hope the presses' coverage of these kinds of crimes changes away from the sensational "Let us see the blood" variety.

For what it's worth, I thought their coverage of Laci Peterson was awful too. I feel bad for the lady, and the guy who killed her should be brought to justice. But the way the media covers stuff like this, it makes a mockery out of the dead woman's "day in court." It fact, the media makes our criminal justice system look like a three ring circus. It damages the legitimacy of the rule of law by making the actors look like bafoons.

16. There are a few differences that changed the coverage
1)The shooting at Red Lake is 300 miles away from the cities and the major TV stations. The shooting at ROCORI was only 60 from the major area TV stations. All of the evacuation and search of the school would have happened in the first hour or so of the event so it would be difficult the stations to have live feed of people evacuating the school and interviewing them.

2) After the ROCORI shooting I hope the TV stations are learning not to create overly sensational stories. They may be looking back and reviewing what worked and did not work for them in regards to reporting events like this.

17. Not only that, but the community leaders had the good sense
to limit access for the media herds until parents and familiy members could be notified.

The tribal leaders won't let this turn into a media circus. They are proud and civilized in comparison to a majority of America.

19. I just found out that friends of mine had kids in the school.
His daughter, along with a little brother were holding a classroom door closed from the shooter. Not that he tried to enter that room but you do it out of fear. His little brothers friend was shot in the face and is in critical condition.

It really hits closer to home. It is seven degrees to Kevin Bacon. It is two degrees to the school shooting.

20. Another connection in my family
I found out that one of the teachers, Neva Rogers, lived in my dad's hometown of Shevlin (pop. 160). She had even taught at the high school there in the early 70s-- right about the time my youngest uncles were attending that same school.

I have at least one uncle that lives in Shevlin. In a town that small, everybody knows everybody.

This is so sad.

21. Hear is a first hand story of the events from a friend of mine.
He gave me permission to post it.

Hey everyone, as you can all guess, this has been a pretty hectic time here in Red Lake. The school shooting here is horrible and prayers have to go out to all the families who lost their loved ones in the tragedy. I am thankful to know that my daughter and sisters and brother made it out safe and sound. My little brother described to em what happened, he said that they thought there was a fight going on and they looked down the hall and seen the gunman coming, and they heard shots. He said that him and the superintendent slammed the door and held it shut as the gunman attempted to get in the room, the superintendent took my brothers cell phone and called the police, and then a shot rang through the window of the classroom. Then the shooter moved on. He was held in the school for awhile until it was cleared. I was at work when a friend called and said "Gare, whats going on at the school?" And I did not know, so I called my step-mother and asked and she informed me that there was something with a shotgun. I started getting real nervous and went outside, because I work just up the street from the school, as I got into our parking lot and seen kids running and as I went farther into the lot I seen 2 police officers running towards the middle school entrance area, and I turned around and ran back to my truck and sped out of the parking lot and to the closest area to the middle school I could. As I pulled my truck into the cafe parking lot, I noticed my little sister standing there next to a cousin of mine, I called her over to me and asked where my daughter and other sister were and she said they were still in the school. At this point I started to really get worried, I did not know what school the shooting was going on in, my daughter and sisters are in the middle school and the shooting was going on in the high school. I found the gym teacher, who was diretcing traffic and asked him about my daughter and sister and he siad they were in lockdown in the middle school, he also informed me they were alright and they would be letting them out of the middle school soon. Then my little sister told me that my little brother was still in the high school, and again I was worrying. Nervous I stood there wondering when I would see him, all these parents standing around crying and wondering started making me get a lump in my throat. Then I heard someone say here they come, I looked and spotted my little brother running from the high school, and started yelling for him, he noticed me and came over, he was very pumped up, he just kept saying "Holy shit, holy shit..." I asked him if he was alright and he told me that he was holding the door closed while the shooter was trying to get in, and then he started wondering about his friends, he said there was alot of screaming going on and parents were hollering for their children. Up to this point I stiil had not seen my daughter or little sister, and then a school employee came out and announced that they were bussing the kids to the elementry school, where they would get on their regular busses and head home. Me and my fiance jumped in the truck and went over and founf them both walking to their bus, I was relieved, I jumped out of the truck and I called for them and they came running to me, and I grabbed and hugged them both. Either girl could talk because me and my fiance were asking them if they were ok, they sat there with their heads down fighting back tears. We went to my fathers house and as we got out I grabbed my little sister again and she broke down and started crying, my fiance was doing the same thing on the other side of the truck with my daughter, as she cried. I am thankful my family made it out, safely, but I am also praying for the families of the children lost in this tragedy and injured. My little brother's best friend is one of the students who is in critical condition in Fargo hospital, he was shot between the eyes and has lost an eye. He is doing better they say, he is starting to respond to tests with light, and he is responding to the parents, but he still has not woke up. Thoughts and prayers to him.

Peace,
xxxxxxxx

It's good to hear from somebody who was actually there, sans the media spin that gets attached to these things.

Dammit. What a rotten thing to happen.
