It’s time to pass the Clean Water Legacy Act. Minnesotans value our water; we all use water, and we should all pay for cleaning up our lakes, rivers and streams. The proposed Clean Water Legacy fees are a practical solution to raise the necessary $80 million a year for 10 years in new money to clean up our most contaminated waters.
After looking at more than 40 different funding options over 18 months, groups representing cities, farmers, businesses, and environmentalists and conservationists agreed that the proposed fee system was the best option to pay for clean up of our most polluted waters, additional water testing, and protection of our clean waters.
The proposed system would be a $3 monthly fee on residential water and sewer bills or septic systems and a higher fee for businesses based on their water usage. This amounts to only a dime a day for residential users!
The $80 million/year in proposed new state funding is only a portion of the estimated $270 million needed each year to complete all clean-up and testing of polluted waters.
The new fee revenue will leverage additional local, private and federal dollars, including an additional $40 million from the federal Farm Bill that will pay for conservation improvements.http://www.mnaction.org/showalert.asp?aaid=618More here:http://www.mepartnership.org/protectourwater/pow_legislation.asp?brf_id=156
