Fleming says he'll run for U.S. Senate

Democratic state Rep. Erik Fleming of Clinton said Saturday that he plans to run for the U.S. Senate in 2006.

He said he'll run regardless of whether Republican incumbent Trent Lott seeks a fourth six-year term.

Despite widespread speculation that Lott, a former Senate majority leader, might not run again, the 63-year-old senator said in February: "My plans at this time are to run for re-election."

The Honorable Erik Robert Fleming is a member of the Mississippi House of Representatives, on behalf of the 72nd District, which encompasses parts of Hinds and Madison Counties. Fleming was first elected to the post in January 1999 to finish the unexpired term of Hinds County Circuit Judge Tomie Green. In August 1999, Rep. Fleming was re-elected to a full four-year term in the Mississippi Legislature. In August 2003, Fleming stood unopposed for a second four-year term. Currently, Fleming is an abstinence educator with the Mississippi Community Development Corporation, a non-profit agency located in his legislative district. Most recently, Fleming was also the Chief Operating Officer for New Horizon Ministries, Inc., a non-profit agency in Jackson, MS.

Did you notice the statement from Lott's office that he may not be retiring?

I can't seem to find anything about his stance on the issues. I'm not from missippi, so I'll leave that to the Mississippians, but he sounds like our kind of guy:

Rep. Erik Fleming, D-Clinton, is the most prolific early bill writer, just as he has been the past few years. He's sponsoring 81 of the 192 House bills and five of six House resolutions that have been filed so far.

Among Fleming's recycled proposals: Prohibiting the surgical debarking of vicious dogs, allowing medical use of marijuana and banning the renting of hotel rooms for less than 24 hours at a time.

Fleming said Monday all three are quality-of-life issues. He said he's heard reports from other states about drug dealers having dogs surgically silenced so the animals can attack law-enforcement officers. He said marijuana could help ease the pain of chemotherapy or other medical treatments. And, Fleming said rent-by-the-hour hotel rooms are promoting illicit activity.

"We're trying to create a more wholesome atmosphere," Fleming said. "Those type of hotels breed prostitution and drug use."

I also like his pro-education stance. Lott has totally missed the boat on that issue and has been spending his time shoring up his pork by getting funding for the military and highways and contracts for shipbuilding.

Educational funding in MS is a huge issue, the lack of adequate funding is at the crisis level.

pro - medical marijuna is a goner.

Note: He was sunk anyway if Lott runs again. That being said, maybe he can at least get some talk going.
