Pascagoula - The 12 Miles South Coalition is sponsoring the Mississippi Coastal Drilling Forum on August 21 at the Ms. Coast Coliseum. The group held a press conference today to urge Coast legislators, state officials and the congressional delegation to attend.

Citing recent press comments and criticism by elected officials that more information is needed regarding the drilling issue, the Coalition today announced that they are giving these officials an opportunity to address their constituents directly on this controversial subject.

"We believe more information and public involvement in this issue would benefit everyone. For instance, we are getting reports that seismic testing is already being done in our waters. We want to know the truth.", said Louis Skrmetta, Coaliton board member ans second generation coast businessman.

"There has been too much secrecy and too little public involvement. For instance, the Governor promised Coast residents that nothing would be done to hurt the Coast. At the same time the state knew that federal leases for drilling near the islands were being sold. Those leases wrere kept secret by the state which offered no objection. We must now ask, 'What else is being kept from the public',? The only way to find out is to open this process to to full public participation. That is why we are inviting our elected leaders to make their positons and all the facts known," said Skrmetta. "All concrened citizensshould write, email, call and fax your elected leaders and urge them to oppose drilling and attend this event. Now is the time for full disclosure and public scrutiny."

Anyone going to this?

4. Okay, it was worth it.
About 3000 people showed up to show support against the seismic testing and oil exploration around the barrier islands.

There was enough Trent Lott and Haley Barbour smackdowns to restore my faith that Mississippians can be reached to some degree.

They aren't all hopeless neocons.
