In increasing numbers, Johnson County (Kansas) residents show a preference for advance voting. In this year’s primaries, more than 30 percent of the 77,000 people who cast ballots in the county did so ahead of Election Day.
The percentage of advance voters has climbed steadily in the last three primary elections. Johnson County Election Commissioner Brian Newby predicts that 50 percent of voters could submit their choices in advance for the November general election. That would be a record.
Missouri needs an advance voting law, too.
Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan told The Star’s Editorial Board on Thursday that she would push state lawmakers again next year to approve advance voting because it relieves the pressure of long lines on Election Day.
Voters in the November election, with many contests and issues, could have long waits at polling places.
“It’s nonsense that we don’t have this (advance voting) in Missouri,” she said.
