Rehberg, Velazquez spar in first debate

GREAT FALLS - The major party candidates for the U.S. House opened their debate schedule Saturday on a contentious note, throwing verbal slugs at each other right off.

Democratic challenger Tracy Velazquez of Bozeman, a health and management consultant, said the Republican candidate "has gone Washington" and tries harder to curry favor with national party leaders than vote in the best interests of Montanans, especially on health care and tax issues.

Velazquez, 39, said Rep. Denny Rehberg voted against child tax credits for Montana's working poor and favored large tax cuts for the wealthy and large business that led to big, harmful federal deficits.

She also questioned whether Rehberg had successfully carried any major bills or used his seniority as effectively as other members of the delegation.
