Moving to NV

Las Vegas, specifically. Anyone care to give me the low-down on NV/LV politcs?

I just moved here, as well! Actually, I lived here during high-school years, many, many years ago, and just recently came back. But... I'm nowhere near you - up north in the High Sierras.

Was thrilled when I started checking out what was happening here and found Jack Carter running for Ensign's seat! I've volunteered at his website, and IF I decide to stay, will have to do the truck registration, driver's license, insurance thing. Staying at my dad's house and although he wants me to say, I'm not sure at this point... If he gets to the point of needing me here, I will stay as long as necessary. BUT, I have to admit, it feels pretty good to be back in my old stomping grounds!

with the rest of the State and the North heavily Repuke.

But both regions have "enjoyed" a kind of "flip-flopping" of registrations for the past decade or so.

Many newcommers aren't registered, so the opportunities to make inroads into Democratic victories is problematic.

I recently volunteered for Jack Carter's campaign - and am quite disappointed.

Only 5 of us showed up to canvass a neighboorhood - and 2 of them were on the campaign staff.

We only walked 5 streets - two blocks long - in a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood - with English only literature. Not a good start.

Contrast that with Shelley Berkley's very professional and organized campaigns - so many volunteers any one day that they rent out a hall to "stage" the campaign event - canvass neighboorhoods, etc.

About 50-100 volunteers at any one time.

Unfortunately, Shelley is not in my congressional district - that repuke lightweight Porter is - and so far not a word about his challenger - a first time congressional aid to Harry Reid - with over 21 years experience, but no ads, no calls to volunteer, etc.

It's a small enough state that you can get quickly "sucked" into the political vortex - I had to back away due to business concerns - too busy to be dependable - and this is the first campaign I'm involved in in two election cycles.

Each Dem candidate seems to covet their own organization - so there virtually little sharing of resources when that could be most helpful.

Couple that with a lack of a year-round/permanent campaign strategy/staff that only gears up a few months before each election, and I am not surprised at the results we've had as a party.

But more and more younger persons are getting involved - I am 53 as was among the "younger" group when I last attended a Dem party club monthly meeting!

Other than Harry Reid and Shelley Berkley, I don't see any powerful staffs - yet.

All the other offices - including the governorship - seemed to be "sacrifical" runs - with no real chance of WINNING.

Oscar Goodman is a FANTASTIC Democratic Mayor of Las Vegas, and can probably keep the office as long as HE desires it - he's that secure and "loved" here.

Jim Gibson (D Mayor of Henderson) is running against Jim Gibbons (repuke congressman from Reno) for the Governorship (or is it the other way around?!!) - it's that bad in name confusion. Even tho he is a Dem in party affiliation, Gibson is STRONGLY against Gay Marriage and is very conservative on many issues - too conservative for me.

I'm for State Senator Dina Titus - who is also running for Governor - she's what I'd consider a progressive/liberal on the issues.

The state is heavily MORMON - so that figures into things in a big way considering that Mormons vote overwhelmingly Repuke - altho Harry Reid had a very good meeting with his church recently and they agreed to disagree on some major issuess and continue to support him in spite of his more progressive (by comparison) stances on the issues.

Just my personal observations for now.

She's leading in the polls against Gibson, and most of all, I think that she's "the real deal."

I disabled my inbox because of some neanderthal was making threatening comments to me outside of public forums. The moderators seem to do nothing about it - he's still a member.

I also live in LV and agree, to large extent, with TankLV -- except for Oscar. I wouldn't consider him fantastic. He certainly makes a splash, and overall he's okay, but I despise his attitude toward the homeless in this town. Leaves a bad taste in my mouth every time I read or hear his latest statements.

Moving the hot air around will only cook you faster - like a convection oven!

Oh, well this is our equivalent of "tornado alley", "blizzard of the month" and "hurrican season".

Hope the electricity doesn't cut out any time soon - it did for a few hours a few weeks ago - luckily it was at nite.

Oh -- and this is our "flood week" too, apparently. I'm so excited, since I have to drive across town Mon-Thur to the Cheyenne campus to teach the damned and devoted (the only ones who will take a summer class) early American history -- a plethora of opportunities to find low, flooded areas.
