Las Vegas radio ad implores Hispanics to get out and vote
"Our community is under attack," a male voice intones in the radio ad.

"There are people who don't want us here," a female voice continues.

That foreboding beginning then segues into a reminder that "being Latino in Las Vegas is becoming more difficult every day," that some politicians are "persecuting ... undocumented workers" and that voting is a way to "confront those who want to get rid of us."

Democracia USA, a Miami-based organization, is expected to hit four local Spanish-language radio stations with the spots later this week in what may be the only nonpartisan effort during this election cycle by local or national groups to awaken a so-called "sleeping giant:" the Hispanic voter.

The radio spot focuses on immigration rights and the notion of voting to protect rights to mobilize those who have not voted before - a strategy that may work for that sector of the Hispanic electorate, according to analysts.

1. 25% of the population but only 10% of the active voters
I hope that's a partial explanation why Nevada is not turning blue as rapidly as forecast.

It's great the radio ads are trying to boost Tessa Hafen in NV-3. She is a great candidate but her sleazy opponent Jon Porter has a ton of casino backing and has been running disgraceful and misleading TV ads all day and night for months. It is one of the districts we can win in national wave but Porter is favored, generally ahead 7-10 points in the polling, but no polls since the Foley revelations.

The only scheduled debate in NV-3 is tommorow night, October 19, at 8 PM Pacific. It will be telecast locally but I'm not sure CSPAN has plans to carry it. Perhaps replayed later.

3. Nevada Votes for Obama!
Early results in last night's election indicate huge voter turnout in Nevada with Hispanic voters choosing Obama 4 to 1. I'd say the radio ads were very effective!

:)

I'm sure that's very rare, first post ever in the Nevada forum. :toast:

Well, this thread is two years old so those radio spots were from 2006, but this year they were even more prevalent, and effective.

I mentioned in 2006 that the Hispanic vote was only 10% of the Nevada electorate. That was from 2004 results. It has subsequently been much more dependable, up to 13% in '06 and 15% this year. The Nevada electorate in total had an amazing transformation, from 77% white in 2004, which equaled the national percentage, to only 69% this year, compared to 75% nationally. That 69% number was game, set, match before the first vote was cast.
