Get involved! Join America Coming Together this weekend!
Hey DU'ers,

My name is Yaron and I work for America Coming Together in Manchester, NH. For those of you who don't know who we are, ACT is a non-profit grassroots organization dedicated to creating the largest voter mobilization project in American History. Knocking on doors and speaking the truth, ACT canvassers are laying the groundwork to defeat George W. Bush and his local Republican allies and elect progressives in federal, state, and local elections in 2004.

Each week, ACT rotates around the state and canvasses each of New Hampshire's towns and communities. This weekend we will be canvassing Amherst, NH on Saturday, July 3rd starting at 10:00 am. For more information about this event, and to find out information about all of our future events, please visit www.acthere.com . If you are interested in hitting the streets and mobilizing voters please contact America Coming Together at 603-622-9000 or pm (private message) me. If you can't make it this weekend but you still want to get involved, we have plenty of opportunities for you to join us. Give us a call and we can let you know what we are doing in your area and remember to visit www.acthere.com . Also, visit our website at www.act4victory.org .

We look forward to seeing you out there!

Yaron

1. Not exactly the most reputable group...
Political group paid felons to canvass voters door to door

By DAVID A. LIEB
The Associated Press
06/23/2004

JEFFERSON CITY - A political group has paid felons - some convicted of sex offenses, assault and burglary - to conduct door-to-door voter registration drives in at least three election swing states, including Missouri.

America Coming Together says that convicted criminals deserve a second chance in society and employs felons as voter canvassers in major metropolitan areas in Missouri, Florida, Ohio and perhaps in other states among the 17 it is targeting in its drive. Some of the felons lived in halfway houses, and at least four returned to prison.

The group's canvassers ask residents which issues are important to them and, if they are not registered, sign them up as voters. They gather telephone numbers and other personal information, such as drivers license numbers or partial Social Security numbers, depending on what a state requires for voter registration.

Felons on probation or parole are ineligible to vote in many states. Doug Lewis, executive director of the Election Center, which represents election officials, said he knew of no laws against felons registering other people to vote.

Sending felons to folk's doorstep may not be the best PR move.
