Council plans law charging for repeat calls to police
Council plans law charging for repeat calls to police

PHILLIPSBURG, NJ -- Soon in this town, it'll be three calls and you're out -- of money that is.

Town council expects to put a new law on the books next month whereby if the police are called to a private property more than three times in one year, the owner will be charged by the town for each additional call.

"We don't want people not to call the police," said council Vice President Jim Shelly. "Our goal is to go after that property owner whose property is a continuous source of police calls whether it's a rental or single-family home."

Under the law, which council introduced Tuesday and plans to adopt in March, the owner will be charged a fee intended to cover the costs associated with the officers, equipment and administrative costs related to each call above the limit.

Council has yet to set that amount.

If the owner fails to pay, the town can take civil action against him or her or impose the fees as a municipal lien against the property.

1. You know who will get nailed by this
Elderly people whose calls to police can be best summarized by "I'm lonely and I'm scared."

Also, what are they going to do for domestic violence? A helluva lot of legitimate calls can be generated by that, especially after the abusive spouse has been forced out of the home, whether or not there's a restraining order. That's when they KILL.

I can see charging landlords for multiple calls for loud parties, fights, and drug dealing, but please! Soembody's got to interject a little common sense into this one.

2. Sorry your husband beat you up,
but here is a bill for the police call since this is the 4th time we've responded here this year.

So she gets a bill from the police to go along with the broken nose. What justice!

3. Those won't be as bad
as the battered women who stop calling for that reason and end up dead. Where there's smoke, there's fire. Nothing good can come of this.

PHILLIPSBURG -- Despite protest from some residents and town officials, a split council adopted a new law Tuesday that charges property owners for excessive police calls.

Under the law, which passed by a 3-2 vote, if the police are called to a private property more than three times in one year, the owner will be charged by the town for each additional call.

The fee is intended to cover the costs associated with the officers, equipment and administrative costs related to each call above the limit. Council has yet to set an amount.

If the owner fails to pay, the town can take civil action against the resident or impose fees as a municipal lien against the property.

5. Your Bush tax cuts at work!

That's the down side to them--it drains off state tax revenue that has to be replaced. If Phillipsburg is so desparate for money, it should raise lcoal taxes--even at the risk of someone not getting re-elected. This sounds very, VERY dangerous--and it can't possibly be constitutional.

6. The sad part is this is a Dem council
and the only one of two towns in the county with an overwhelmingly large Dem electorate. :(
