Corzine puts campaign officially in motion

Democrat vows to restore faith in Trenton

BY DEBORAH HOWLETT
Star-Ledger Staff

Four months after announcing his candidacy, Sen. Jon Corzine formally launched his campaign for governor at two rallies yesterday, saying he would be "independent, fiscally responsible, socially progressive and effective."

"I pledge to serve you -- the people of New Jersey -- not my friends, not my party and not myself," Corzine told a crowd of 500 people in a sweltering hall at New Jersey City University.

Earlier in the day, Corzine made the same speech in an appearance before 100 supporters at Washington Township High School in Gloucester County.

Corzine used the twin events in the separate media markets of Philadelphia and New York to re-introduce himself to voters and paint in broad strokes how he envisions governing New Jersey in the wake of a series of public corruption scandals.

"Now, more than ever, the challenge of restoring credibility and confidence in government becomes a threshold criteria for those who ask for the public trust," he said.

Kicking off race for governor, Corzine defends big donations

Thursday, March 31, 2005

By JOSH GOHLKE
TRENTON BUREAU

U.S. Sen. Jon Corzine offered a spirited defense of his avid political spending Wednesday, accusing his Republican opponents of choosing personal attacks over policy debates.

In a speech marking the official "kickoff" of his three-month-old campaign for governor, Corzine sought to counter criticism of his millions of dollars in donations to fellow Democratic politicians, party organizations and charities.

He also alluded to his mother's $37,000 donation to the Bergen County Democratic Organization in the fall, derided by Republicans as a transparent effort to skirt the legal limits that prevented the senator from giving more.

"Some have taken a page from the Karl Rove playbook and are attacking me personally," Corzine said, referring to President Bush's chief political strategist. "First they attacked my support for charitable causes. Then they attacked my support for the Democratic Party. And lately, they've even attacked my mom."

Speaking at a South Jersey high school, Corzine compared his critics to the advocacy group Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, who dogged Democrat John Kerry's presidential campaign with advertisements that cast doubts on his service in Vietnam.

Corzine kicks off campaign for Governor

By STEVE KORNACKI

JERSEY CITY, March 30 - Jon S. Corzine kicked off his bid for governor today. For the second time.

Back in early December, he stood alone behind a podium and in front of a black curtain in a Newark hotel conference room, stating his intent to run in a tone that fell somewhere between purposeful and somber.

That press conference, which had the feel of a hostage tape filming, was a dose of preventive medicine. Dick Codey, weeks into his 14-month stint as acting governor, was in the midst of a once-in-a-lifetime media honeymoon, the kind that had political observers wondering if he could knock Corzine off in a primary. Corzine needed to make a definitive statement before things got out of control.

He spent the winter months outfoxing Codey in a game of backroom poker and today in Jersey City, the last leg of a two-stop announcement tour, Corzine got to make the kind of formal entrance into the governor's race he'd wanted to all along -- on a stage filled with a multi-ethnic collection of average Joes and Janes and in a room packed with hundreds of cheering Democratic elected officials and party regulars.

Corzine opens campaign with Washington Twp. rally

The Democrat began his race for governor with a speech touting his business background.

By Angela Delli Santi

Associated Press

U.S. Sen. Jon S. Corzine (D., N.J.) launched his gubernatorial campaign yesterday with an event in Gloucester County, touting his experience in business and politics.

Accompanied by 100 supporters in the Washington Township High School auditorium, the 58-year-old Democrat laid out a broad vision for the state, identifying fiscal and ethics issues as hallmarks of the campaign.

"It's time for a leader who comes to state government from a different experience: someone who is not encumbered by an old culture, historical entanglements and the status quo," Corzine said.

Opening Bid for Governor, Corzine Vows Ethics Reform

By DAVID KOCIENIEWSKI
New York Times

Published: March 31, 2005

JERSEY CITY, March 30 - Pledging to use his business expertise to bring economic prosperity and higher ethical standards to New Jersey, Senator Jon S. Corzine formally began his campaign for governor on Wednesday.

Appearing at raucous kickoff rallies at both ends of the state, Mr. Corzine said his proposal for an elected comptroller and stricter campaign finance regulations for state vendors would help deter rampant political corruption that has driven up the cost of government.

Mr. Corzine, former chief executive and co-chairman of Goldman Sachs, also said that his plan to overhaul the budget process, trim spending and better manage the state's assets would ease the tax burden on New Jersey residents and encourage businesses to create more jobs.

Although he is a United States senator and the standard-bearer of the party that controls the New Jersey governor's office and its Legislature, Mr. Corzine cast himself as an outsider with the vision, management skills and independence to shake up the state's political culture.

Corzine makes candidacy official

Democratic senator talks of ethics, job creation and property taxes

Published in the Asbury Park Press 03/31/05

GANNETT NEW JERSEY

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP — U.S. Sen. Jon Corzine officially kicked off his campaign for governor Wednesday talking about ethical standards in government, job creation and property taxes.

The three issues are connected, with ethics providing the bedrock for the others, Corzine said at Washington Township High School.

High ethical standards must be restored to government at all levels, said Corzine, D-N.J.

People aren't going to listen to what politicians have to say if they feel they can't be trusted, Corzine said. He has previously proposed such ethics measures as electing a state comptroller, banning pay-to-play at all levels of government and re-establishing the Office of the Public Advocate.

Corzine leaves gov foes in the dust, Hudson says

Numbers are in line with statewide figures

Thursday, March 31, 2005
By Molly Bloom

If it were up to Hudson County, New Jersey Sen. Jon Corzine of Hoboken would win the governor's election in a walk over former Jersey City Mayor Bret Schundler.

Also, according to a poll conducted March 22 by New Jersey City University for The Jersey Journal, Corzine would defeat businessman Douglas Forrester, the other front-runner for the Republican nomination.

Poll respondents favored Corzine over Schundler, 40.9 percent to 20.2 percent, and over Forrester, 38 percent to 20.7 percent. The remainder said they were undecided.

These wide margins are in line with Corzine's leads in recent statewide polls, in which he held a 3-to-2 lead over both men, noted the poll's supervisors, Fran Moran of NJCU's Political Science Department and Bruce Chadwick of the English Department.

2. Join Me in a Campaign to Change New Jersey
Dear Kire,

It's an incredibly humbling and wonderful experience to be able to fight for what matters. Almost five years ago, I left private life to fight full time as your Senator for the causes and the people I believe in. Early in my life, I started at the ground floor of a great American business, worked hard, and made my way to the top. I have been blessed with a loving family, good public schools, and the strength and support of my community. I know the American Dream, because I have lived it.

I am running for Governor of New Jersey because I want everyone to have the same shot at it that I did. And in traveling the state and engaging with thousands of constituents over the years, it's clear to me that opportunity is something we all believe in. So this campaign for governor will be a different campaign, because expanding opportunity is not what I will run on in this campaign. It is what we will run on in our campaign.

The simple reality is that New Jersey is in a fiscal crisis. The path to this crisis has been long and winding, but the challenge of restoring credibility confidence to our government falls on all of us. I am a reformer who believes in accountability, but I also believe that progressive political change happens only when the people are involved in politics and government. I am a businessman who knows that only sound visionary management with leaders focused on solving tough problems can fix the immediately dire situation we find ourselves in. But I also know that a campaign like this and a government like the one we all want can only come about if every citizen in New Jersey who cares about our future can find their way into this campaign.

That is why I have asked Congressman Pallone and Holt and Blair McGinnis to lead a new campaign to solicit ideas, opinions, participation, and hard work from everyone in New Jersey. This new effort is called the Corzine Connection, and you can find it online at http://www.CorzineConnection.com/. The future of New Jersey - and the future of the Democratic Party - will be built on the entry of new people and new ideas into politics, into campaigns, and ultimately, into government. The Corzine Connection is a strong step in this direction.

When you elected me to the Senate, I promised you would get a fighter who stand up against insiders and special interests, unbought and unbossed. I have kept this promise. I stood with the 9/11 families to get the 9/11 commission established, and against stiff opposition I fought to make chemical facilities safe from terrorists. We worked to protect New Jersey's prescription drug program, won the battle for corporate reforms in the wake of Enron and Worldcom, and protected thousands of acres in the New Jersey Highlands from overdevelopment. I do not run away from responsibility, or tough situations.

So today, I am formally kicking off my campaign to become Governor of New Jersey. (The full text of my kickoff speech can be found here). I hope you'll join me in seeking reform by signing up for the Corzine Connection. During this campaign, for the next eight months, and beyond, we will hold a statewide conversation on the future of New Jersey, and by extension, America. I have begun this conversation with a strong proposal on ethics. I have also proposed a comprehensive plan to move New Jersey away from 'tax, borrow, and spend' to a long-term strategy to 'invest, grow, and prosper'. I am asking you now to join me in this conversation at http://www.corzineconnection.com/.

When I was CEO of Goldman Sachs, it was rated one of the 10 best places to work in America. Working together, we are going to make New Jersey the best places in America to live, to work, to go to school, to start a business and to grow old with dignity. Together, we will set a new standard of excellence.

Best,

Jon Corzine
