CDC Report suggests halt to VX plan for NJ and Delaware River

Government fears harm to people, wildlife
By DONNA DE LA CRUZ / Associated Press
04/06/2005

WASHINGTON -- A government report says the U.S. Army's plan to transport the chemical byproduct of the deadly VX nerve agent from Indiana to New Jersey should not go forward until steps are taken to make sure the byproduct will not harm people or fish and wildlife, U.S. Rep. Robert Andrews said Tuesday night.

"This report will and should put an end to this bad idea of disposing of the byproduct in the Delaware River," said Andrews, D-N.J..

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was scheduled to release the report today.

Repubs in Congress legislate to allow Federal override of State desicion on LNG terminal

U.S. may get final say on gas terminal
From staff and wire reports
04/06/2005

Federal regulators would get clearer authority to override state and local opposition in approving import terminals for liquefied natural gas under new energy legislation drafted by House Republicans.

The bill, which lawmakers are to begin considering in detail today, mirrors a broad energy package that failed to pass Congress more than a year ago. One of the few new provisions would solidify the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission as the final arbiter over approval of liquefied natural gas terminals.

A state appeals board in Delaware last week upheld the state's refusal to consider a permit for a liquefied natural gas delivery pier in the Delaware River opposite Claymont. The Coastal Zone Industrial Control Board rejected energy company BP's claim that its $500 million project should be exempt from the state's ban on bulk transfer facilities in Delaware's part of the river.

1. It's actually NJ that wants this - DE is fighting it
Edited on Thu Apr-07-05 10:25 AM by LynneSin
DE border actually is all the water up to the NJ coast, which is where the dispute is located. Plus I think NJ is using a coastal area that isn't heavily populated whereas on our end it's highly populated.

The ban applies in Delaware territory, which by a quirk of Colonial history extends up to the low-tide line on New Jersey's side of the river from opposite Claymont to Artificial Island.

Also - Southern part of NJ tends to lean more on the republican side (That area is pretty rural) and they're competing against a region of Delaware that is more progressive.

2. Yeah, Salem County...Too Many Fundies There
I wouldn't live there if you paid me. I guess they wouldn't mind having their children die from the effects of toxins. Maybe they should send them to Iraq now. Never too young. Send 'em off to boot camp early.
