1. Because of the racist nature of that part of Jersey. Not sure why

2. Same reason Bergen County (northwest, anyway) is totally repuke.

Property values. It's that simple. The folks who have moved here since the 1980's haven't bought homes to live in them so to speak. It's another form of investment. The thing that keeps them up at night and makes their hearts palpate is the idea of anything that will prevent them from their expected 20% (at least) return on their properties within five years of purchase. If the President and his administration set out on a course that affects Wall Street negatively, less profits for everyone including shareholders. Less money means less chance of propspective buyers who will accept outrageous home prices. And that leaves the present property owners in Morris and Bergen Countries with White Elephants with pretty landscaping. Therefore, these property owners will tend to go where the money is, and that's usually republicans. They believe that democrats will give away "their" (read, prospective) money and they will be reduced to the middle class, and that is unacceptable.

P.S. They're also prone to be republican because of the illusion of being elite among other communities in the suburbs. Not everyone can afford to move to Randolph or Franklin Lakes. That makes them feel good too.

3. It's ALWAYS been disgustingly Repug in Morris . . .
In some areas, GOP incumbents run unopposed because no one (even other Repugs) will take them on.

I sometimes wonder how I can continue to live here. Everybody automatically ASSUMES you're a Republican. I can count the local registered Dems I know on one hand. Perhaps most of them keep silent due to fear.

But (I think -- I hope!) things are shifting Dem, even if slightly.

4. More about . .
the assumption that you MUST BE GOP if you live in Morris: You would not believe the Pro-Bush crap e-mails I received after 9/11 -- sappy, gloppy BS about what a "true Christian" he is, blah, blah, blah.

:puke:

5. It's Been That Way For Years
When my family moved to Morris Township in 1953, they BEGGED my mother to work at the polling places because they couldn't get enough Democrats. Mom worked at the polls at the Mt. Kemble Fire House until her health prevented her from continuing....

6. Morris County is Half Backwater and Half Park Place
The backwater parts of the county (pretty much everything past Madison) are obviously repuke for religious and education level reasons. The Park Place part, Chatham-Madison and vicinity are repuke because it is filled with a bunch of rich, racist, and righteous people who have more care for their property values and maintaining their "perfect" lifestyles than looking into how national politics really affect their lives.

I live in a very nice, some would say ritzy town, but not in Morris county. Morris County is completely "buffered" by other very white and very suburban communities. My town is pretty close to urban areas and lower-middle class suburban areas.

The difference is that since we are close to other, more integrated and "blue collar" towns, there is a better sense of community, of respect for others, and of involvment in national issues beyond parroting fat boy Rush Limbaugh.
