For Republicans, Bush's fundraiser Wednesday afternoon at the New Jersey Exposition Center in Edison shows the party isn't ready to raise the white flag in this blue state. It is the first time the president has traveled to the state solely to help the party raise money, according to Tom Wilson, chairman of the Republican State Committee. The most recent state polls put Bush's popularity in the 28 percent range, but Wilson is counting on that Republican core to write checks.

"There are still a great number of people in New Jersey, Republicans particularly, who are enthusiastic and support the president," he said. Some Republicans are looking beyond Bush, who they say shares some of the blame for the losses of Kean and gubernatorial contender Douglas Forrester in 2005. Cape May County Republican chairman David Von Savage said former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, the current New Jersey voter favorite in presidential polls, holds broad appeal in the state and his nomination could help the state party.

Republicans believe U.S. Attorney Chris Christie has the potential to derail Democrats in a statewide race.

(Hmmm. Not sure that's a US Attorney's job, huh? Derailing the opposition party?)
