Atty. general likely choice as next N.J. chief justice
Attorney General Stuart Rabner is expected to be nominated as the next chief justice of the state Supreme Court, putting him in line for an influential post that he could hold for the next 23 years.

A Statehouse source said Thursday that Gov. Corzine will nominate Rabner on Monday. Anne Milgram, first assistant attorney general, is expected to be tapped to replace Rabner as the state's top legal official. The governor's office would not discuss its pending plans.

"We have nothing to announce at this time," said Corzine spokesman Anthony Coley.

Rabner, a Caldwell resident and registered Democrat, has worked under both Corzine, a liberal Democrat, and U.S. Attorney Christopher J. Christie, a Republican appointed by President Bush. He has won near-universal praise from members of both parties.
