Fire closes 59th Street bridge

A smoky fire at a construction site on the Queensboro Bridge prompted officials to close down the entire two-tier span this afternoon.

While the exact cause had not yet been determined, witnesses said the blaze began in scaffolding and a tarp at the tower closest to the Queens side where workers have been blasting away lead-based paint in preparation for a major renovation of the bridge.

Yesterday on the Brooklyn Bridge there was a guy sitting on the ledge of the Manhattan side Tower, cops had to crawl out after him but they brought him in.
