As Sam Graham-Felsen inquires, “How is it possible, that during a time of unprecedented promise for youth mobilization that this generation has remained so silent, so acquiescent?” In a time in which an unjustified war is being waged in the name of democracy, we as the upcoming policy-makers, have a responsibility to challenge our current system. We have had our privacy invaded, seen the climate crisis disregarded, allowed the constitution to be undermined, been lied to consistently, witnessed scandal after scandal, and have hardly risen our voices in objection. We are watching a war without reason carry on endlessly, requiring an immense amount of economic support, an ever-growing number of lives taken, and more and more animosity building throughout the world as a result of our leader’s careless actions. We must use our rights as American citizens to show our disappointment and distress to those in power.

In an attempt to address these concerns, a group of North Carolina students have proposed a student protest against the current war in Iraq. The protest will be November 4th, 2006 at the capitol building in Raleigh. We will protest from noon until about 4 o clock pm and incorporate peaceful rallying along with motivational speeches. Our goals for the protest include:

• Demonstrate that students across North Carolina are concerned with the current political situation, especially the War in Iraq
• Show support for our troops
• Raise awareness before the imperative week of voting
• Example that peace can bring about changes

We are calling on all students across North Carolina to be a part of this monumental process of raising our voices to instigate change. The world is at our finger tips, and this is our opportunity to show that we wish to live in a world free of unjustified hate, corrupt politics, and violence. Returning once more to the worlds of Felsen, “If millions of young people take to the streets- as they have in other countries, and as they have in the past in this country- policies will change, the status quo will shift, and young people will once again believe in their own power.” We are begging you to please help us “Silence the Violence” and unite as students advocate a peaceful solution!
