YES! Confirmation from a new poll that NC is turning BLUE!
Is N.C. turning blue?

North Carolina is a red state when it comes to presidential politics, having last voted for a Democrat in 1976 for Jimmy Carter.

But with public opinion turning against the Iraq war, might the Democrats have a chance?

Yes, says a new poll by Public Policy Polling, a Raleigh-based polling firm.

The survey found that a generic Democratic presidential candidate would beat a generic Republican presidential candidate, 43-41.

The firm polled 448 likely general election voters on Feb. 12. It had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.6 percentage points.

I imagine the generic match-up is simply the question whether someone would vote for a Democrat or Republican for President. This is really good news, though, and supports what I've been saying for a long time: a Democratic candidate CAN win in the South.

I hope ALL the Dem candidates will start paying more attention. I know at least one will: John Edwards.

1. Coool! I love John Edwards...
...It'd be SO awesome to have this state turn blue in 08 - AND have the President of the US be one of our own! That'd truely be something to celebrate!

Us NC DUers would have to have a HUGE party if that happens.

2. If Edwards wins
Will they change the statue in front of the old capitol that shows Jackson, Polk, and Johnson? Maybe they can replace Jackson since it has been pretty much proven he was born in SC.

3. I hope so, but those generic polls
are not very indicative of what would actually happen once we get two real candidates. For example a Gore-Edwards or Edwards-Richardson ticket could win NC; Clinton-Obama, not a chance. And with our (is it 15?) electoral votes we are a very important state.

But living where I do it's really hard to see NC as anything but very deep BLUE! Repoobs living here don't like to talk politics. I think I know a couple of them. :)

4. Don't see it happening for a while
My native state of Virginia will turn blue before North Carolina ever does. The majority of blue states have at least one major metro area. In the case of Virginia, this would be Northern Virginia, and its politics has increasingly been directing politics on the state level. We're getting there with all the growth in Charlotte and the Triangle, but we have a ways to go.

5. Well, Gov. Easley shows it can be done...
the gun issue is a biggie for a lot of NC Dems and indies, though, which is one reason IMHO there was a 10-point spread between Easley (pro-gun-owner) and the Kerry/Edwards ticket in 2004.

But I'm not optimistic.
