Dann cast the delinquencies revealed in the records as regrettable but not unusual for the struggling owner of a small business. He contended that, unlike Gov. Bob Taft, Petro and Ohio Republican Chairman Bob Bennett, "I never abused the public trust or looted the public treasury."

"I have never violated the ethical standards of my office or of my profession - and I never will," he said.

He accused Republicans whom he has vocally attacked of orchestrating the release of his personal tax information through "contortion" of the public-records law. As evidence, he cited an Ohio Republican Party blog posting that quipped after an earlier tax lien hit the newspaper: "There's more where that came from."

Bennett fired back, dubbing Dann a "tax-evading, law-breaking divorce lawyer" who has not lived up to the high standards he "so piously sets for everyone else."...
