'Sub' teacher not hired by board taught 3 days; situation regrettable, Harrison superintendent says

SCIO – Harrison County sheriff deputies and Harrison Hills City School District officials are investigating how Frederick Saunders, who was not hired as a substitute teacher, was able to enter Harrison Hills Junior High at Scio and teach three days last week.

The situation came to light after Saunders was charged with using his vehicle Friday to strike a teacher on the picket line. The 140–member Harrison Hills Teachers Assn. has been on strike since Oct. 1.

“Security procedures in place allowed Frederick Saunders of Youngstown into Harrison Junior High School,” Drexler said today, adding the district and Huffmaster, a security firm, are interviewing every teacher and administrator in that school to review procedures and make any necessary changes.

“What we believe happened, all substitutes come in on a security van. This guy did not but he was in line and signed in with the teachers (at the school),” Drexler said. “Somewhere there was a lapse in security in terms of counterbalances and checks.”

Three members of the union were hit by Huffmaster vans while they were picketing last week. The board of education has illegally purchased newspaper space to outline their proposals. They have posted false proposals on their on-line site. This is a very ugly strike in a poverty ridden area of Ohio.

that they are willing to cross picket lines to teach? That is what I am finding wrong with this story.

When the strike is settled, I hope the union teachers find a way to make life very rough for any sub who crossed picket lines. I hope they find ways not to cooperate with them if they ever come into the schools to sub again.

I work as a substitute teacher. Right now that works for me, because my health is still poor. I have good days and bad days. I can stay home when I need to.

A couple of years ago, a district where I sub went on strike. Their union rep called me and asked me not to cross their picket lines. I told them that I would never cross a picket line. They remembered that. The result was that nearly every teacher there asks for me when they need a sub. (I am an experienced teacher, too, so that helps). I get more jobs there and better cooperation from the staff than anywhere else.

What kind of idiot crosses any picket line?

Then they are housed at an area motel and bussed into the schools. I lost a best friend who crossed the picket line when I was teaching. Of course, she took the holy road called, "I'm there for the kids."
We are all there for the kids. That's why we have to stand up for fairness.

Subbing is hard work. I did it for a year when I went back to teaching after my kids were in school. Thanks for not crossing the line. It means a lot to the union - and, you are right, union members have long memories.

perfect extra-income job for a musician. While I do understand the desperation of some people who live ( barely) paycheck to paycheck, I myself would never ever cross any picket line, especially teachers, even though the union here has never lifted a finger on behalf of subs.

...this would've been my high school. (It's since been converted to a junior high.) My grandfather was once the superintendent, mother graduated from there, my aunts, my uncle, my cousins.

It's a VERY small town, so TRUST me: they have to truck in any scabs from elsewhere.
